Sargan Eight Railway - Mokra Gora - Serbia
The Sargan Eight (Šarganska osmica) is an old-fashioned narrow-gauge railway in West Serbia, running from the traditional looking village of Mokra Gora to Šargan Vitasi station. The Shargan “Eight” railroad has got its name because the above sea level of 300m is overcome by the rise upon the hills in the convoluted circles in the shape of number eight. Its construction was finished in 1925. After a long period of inactivity, the railway was finally restored and reopened in 1995. The Šargan eight, with track gauge of 760 mm, represents the most attractive museum tourist railway line with narrow gauge track in the Balkans. The railway passes through the most beautiful landscapes in Mokra Gora, over 5 bridges and 22 tunnels, making the shape of number eight. The journey takes approx. 3 h with several stops for photography and refreshments. Don’t miss the village Drvengrad which sits just a few minutes of walk from the Mokra Gora’s Sargan Eight station. It is a wooden village built by famous director Emir Kusturica for his move “Life is a Mircale”.

The Šargan Eight Railway - Višegrad to Mokra Gora
Today we continue our adventure through the countries of the former Yugoslavia in search of steam as we say good bye to Sarajevo and head to Mokra Gora through beautiful mountain scenery, we follow the course of the Drina River to Višegrad where we had originally intended to join an international steam hauled narrow gauge train to Mokra Gora, sadly that was not to be, instead we picked up the train just inside the Serbian border. Višegrad is a tourist destination, surrounded by mountains on the banks of the Drina River. I made my way to the deserted station where the restored tracks lay rusting in the warm sunshine, I couldn’t help wondering how different it would have looked if the dream of a tourist railway was ever realised, with a smart engine simmering in the platform waiting for excited tourists to finish taking photographs and eating ice-creams before taking their seats on the train. After a delicious lunch at one of the local river side restaurants, we boarded our motor coach for the journey to the Bosnia and Herzegovina/Serbia border, with tantalising glimpses of the railway passing through the picturesque countryside. Once over the border our smartly turned out class 83 locomotive and train was waiting to take us on to Mokra Gora, through pretty rolling hills with plenty of photo stops to record our progress along this rarely used section of the Šargan Eight Railway. Arrival at Mokra Gora showed how the station at Višegrad would look should tourist trains ever return, with restaurants, cafes, tourist shops, hotels, all the hustle and bustle one would expect in a tourist hot spot.

Tara National Park - Serbia
Tara National park is located in western Serbia. It is a part of Dinaric Alps and covers an area of 183 km2. Its length is 50 km, and it is 22 km wide, with average height of 1200 m above sea level. This area is inhabited by the largest population of brown bears in Serbia. Due to its climate and isolation Tara preserved ancient species of trees such as Pancic spruce and other almost fossil species of plants. The highest point is Kozji Rid -1591m and the lowest 291m is at the lake Perućac. Vrelo River is the strongest fountain in the national park, which runs into river Drina after 365 meters. Tara is a typical forest area, and for its preservation and diversity of forest ecosystems one of the richest and most valuable forest areas in Europe. In forest sense Tara are covered with mixed forests of European Spruce, Silver Fir and European Beech (over 85 % of forest area) and specificity compared to other mountains of the Balkan Peninsula is the large number of relict and endemic forest species and plant communities. Special value and importance of the Serbian Spruce (Picea omorika), endemic and relict species, which is inhabits canyons and ravines of the middle course of the Drina River managed to survive the last ice age. There are 53 species of mammals. The most interesting are bear (Ursus arctos), and chamois (Rupicapra rupicapra) which lives even on elevation of 291m. There are 135 species of birds. The most interesting are endangered species such are golden eagle (Aquila chryssetos), peregrine falcon and others. There are more than 251 species of mushrooms. Three of them are poisonous. Amanita phalloides is the most dangerous mushroom in Europe. Throughout the park there are numerous archaeological sites and monuments dating from the Neolithic period to modern times. Most important are the Račа Monastery, оne of the most important centers of Serbian medieval literacy, and the necropolis with tombstones in Rastiste and Perucac, which are nominated for UNESCO World Heritage List.

13 Serbia - Ósemka Szargańska: Mokra Gora - Šargan Vitasi
Stacja kolejowa Mokra Gora - zakwaterowanie w zabytkowych budynkach stacji kolejowej. Po utworzeniu w 1918 roku Królestwa Serbów, Chorwatów i Słoweńców budowa kolei łączącej Belgrad z Sarajewem, a dalej z Dubrownikiem, stała się celem strategicznym. Trwała 3 lata, a pierwszy pociąg wyruszył 25 stycznia 1925 roku. Ósemka Szargańska była częścią tej trasy. Linia została zamknięta w 1974 roku, a następnie odbudowana w latach 1999 – 2003 z pomocą Emira Kusturicy. Szlak Mokra Góra – Šargan Vitasi wynosi 15,5 km. Na jej trasie znajdują 22 tunele (najdłuższy ma 1666 m) i 5 mostów (najdłuższy ma ok. 50 m). W najbardziej stromym miejscu kolejka wspina się pod kątem 18‰. Podróż w jedną stronę trwa ok. 40 min. Шарганска осмица– zabytkowa kolej wąskotorowa (760 mm) w regionie Zlatibor w Serbii oraz Bośni i Hercegowinie. Przewozy turystyczne odbywają się na linii Mokra Góra – Šargan Vitasi. W 2010 roku reaktywowany został szlak do Wiszegradu w Bośni (to fragment dawnej kolei Bosnische Ostbahn z czasów austro-węgierskich). W XIX w. Bośnia i Hercegowina od kongresu berlińskiego (tj. 1878 r.) była zarządzana przez Austro-Węgry (Serbia stanowiła niezależne królestwo). Oba te kraje łączyły interesy gospodarcze więc pod koniec wieku pojawiły się projekty wybudowania łączącej je linii kolejowej. W 1906 r. doprowadzono tory z Višegradu do Vardište, na granicy z Serbią, zyskując połączenie z Sarajewem. Z Belgradu natomiast można było dojechać do Užic (ok. 80 km od granicy z Bośnia). Pozostał odcinek przez góry. Choć krótki, to miał okazać się dla budowniczych nie lada wyzwaniem. Dwie wojny bałkańskie (1912- 1913) oraz I wojna światowa zahamowały budowę brakującego fragmentu. Okupujące Serbię Austro – Węgry przystąpiły do prac na 9-kilometrowej trasie wiosna 1916 r. Postawiono wówczas stację Mokra Gora, ale zatrzymano się u podnóża masywu Šargan. Prace przerwano jesienią tego samego roku, bo pracujący przy budowie żołnierze byli bardziej potrzebni na froncie. Po utworzeniu w 1918 r. Królestwa Serbów, Chorwatów i Słoweńców budowa brakującego odcinka kolei łączącej Belgrad z Sarajewem, a dalej z Dubrownikiem, stała się celem wręcz strategicznym. W ostatnich latach obsługiwała jedynie ruch lokalny. W końcu została zamknięta, a cała infrastruktura w górach Šargan powoli ulegała dewastacji. Dopiero w połowie lat dziewięćdziesiątych ubiegłego wieku zaczęto w Mokrej Gorze oraz we władzach Serbskich Kolei zastanawiać się nad ponownym uruchomieniem wąskotorówki. W 2003 r. wybudowano nową stację Golubići, gdzie w filmie Kusturicy mieszkał Luka z Jadranka i Miloszem. Dworcom w Šargan – Vitasi i Jatare przywrócono wygląd z lat dwudziestych XX w. Między tymi stacjami wymieniono w całości tory. Gruntownej przebudowie poddano najdłuższy tunel Aleksandra I. Ściągnięto cztery spalinowe i trzy parowe lokomotywy. Wśród tych ostatnich znalazła się lokomotywa o wdzięcznej nazwie „Romantika”. Nie nadaje się ona już niestety do jazdy i stoi na zapleczu, za budynkiem dworcowym w Mokrej Gorze. Parowe składy są wykorzystywane jedynie „na specjalne” życzenie, dla z góry umówionych grup. Trasa „Ósemki” ma 15,5 km, a w linii prostej to zaledwie 3,5 km. Nie o dystans tu jednak chodzi, ale o pokonanie różnicy wzniesienia ok. 250 m. Na jej trasie znajdują 22 tunele (najdłuższy jest ostatni, imienia króla Aleksandra I, ma aż 1666 m), które łącznie „zajmują” przeszło jedną trzecią trasy oraz 5 mostów (najdłuższy ma blisko 50 m). W najbardziej stromym miejscu kolejka wspina się pod kątem 18 stopni. Nazwa kolejki – serpentyny torów wiją się i zakręcają tak, że w jednym miejscu osiągają kształt cyfry 8. W połowie trasy kolejka zawraca „górą”, przejeżdża w pobliżu stacji Golubići, robi pętlę wpierw górą, po kilku minutach dołem nad wcześniej mijanymi miejscami, mknąc ku następnym tunelom. Jeszcze tylko długi tunel im. Aleksandra I i pociąg wtacza się na stacje końcowa. Podróż w jedną stronę trwa ok. 40 min. Po krótkim postoju na stacji Šargan – Vitasi (ok. 20 min) pociąg zawraca. Stacyjki i całą infrastruktura kolejowa jest tak dopieszczona, że człowiek czuje się jakby był figurką na makiecie kolejki PIKO. W drodze powrotnej zatrzymujemy się jeszcze w kilku miejscach, gdzie zbudowano z podkładów kolejowych tarasy widokowe. Z góry widać wijąca się w dole trakcje kolejowa i wjazdy do kilku tuneli znajdujących się na różnych poziomach. Jeszcze tylko postój na 20-minutowa przerwę w Jatare i po pół godziny pociąg wtacza się z powrotem na stację w Mokrej Gorze.
