When you're visiting Barcelona it's an absolute must to pay a visit to the Montserrat mountain range as well. It's just 45 minutes on train from the Barça center.
At Montserrat, which literally translates into sawtooth mountain, you can find the Benedictine Abbey Santa Maria de Montserrat, which hosts the Virgin of Montserrat.

A 1 hour drive norththwest of Barcelona is the remarkable Santa Maria de Monserrat Monastery, nestled among the Monserrat mountain range.
The easiest way to access the monastery is to take the Funicular to the top. The ride offers a stunning panoramic view of the jagged mountains below.
Montserrat was the first national park in Spain.
The black statue of the Virgin Mary clutching baby Jesus dates back to the 12th century. Local legend claims that the Benedictine monks were forced to build their monastery around the statue because none of them could physically move it.
In 1844, the Virgin of Montserrat was deemed the patron saint of Catalonia by Pope Leo XIII. For this, Monserrat is one of Catalunya’s most spiritually and culturally significant places.

Montserrat, a day-trip from Barcelona (2011)
Our journey and visit to the Monastery of Montserrat. See human towers at a wedding at min 3:16!
We took the train from Plaça d'Espanya (R5 line but it was a bit confusing to find the metro entrance linked to the trains) and changed for the funicular railway (cremallera) at Monistrol de Montserrat.
Catalonia's holiest place, the Monastery of Montserrat was founded in the 11th century. Destroyed in 1811 by the French, the site was rebuilt in 1844. It hosts the Black Virgin of Montserrat, a small wooden statute (La Moreneta, carbon dated around 12th century) said to be brought here by St Peter in 50 BC. The entrance is by St Mary piazza, where two wings of the Gothic cloister (1477) can be still seen. Accessed through the arch, the inner courtyard hosts the baptistery (1902); its sienna walls soften the light giving a feeling of peace and perfection. A door on the right leads towards the Black Virgin.

Beautiful Montserrat near Barcelona Spain
From our apartment in Barcelona, we took the metro to Espanya station. From there we took the Renfe train (R5) to Manresa, where we took a cable car up to the Monastery at Montserrat. Instead of taking the Funicular up to the top of the mountain, we chose to hike 4.5 hours roundtrip on a trail that took us to the highest point on the mountain, from which we enjoyed spectacular views.
We hope you enjoy this video!
