The Basilica of San Domenico, also known as Basilica Cateriniana, is a basilica church in Siena, Tuscany, Italy, one of the most important in the city. The church was begun in 1226-1265, but was enlarged in the 14th century resulting in the Gothic appearance it has now. However, aspects of the Gothic structure were subsequently destroyed by fires in 1443, 1456 and 1531, and further damage later resulted from military occupation (1548-1552).

It is a large edifice built, like many contemporary edifices of the mendicant orders, in bricks, with a lofty bell tower on the left (this was reduced in height after an earthquake in 1798). The interior is on the Egyptian cross plan with a huge nave covered by trusses and with a transept featuring high chapels. The church contains several relics of St. Catherine of Siena, whose family house is nearby.

Cappella delle Volte is an old praying place of Dominican nuns, connected to numerous episode of sanctity of Catherine of Siena's life. It houses the Canonization of St. Catherine by Mattia Preti, flanked by two 1602 paintings by Crescenzio Gambarelli. Other works by the latter are also present. The main wall has a portrait of St. Catherine.

the left wall of the nave has a Madonna with Child by Francesco di Vannuccio, framed by an Eternal with Saint by Il Sodoma and by a predella with fifteen Stories of the New Testament by Antonio Magagna. Rutilio Manetti painted a St. Anthony Abbot's Exorcism, Sebastiano Folli a St. Catherine of Alexandria and Francesco Vanni a St. Hyacinth Saving a Statue of the Madonna from a Fire.

The altars on the right side are decorated by a Appearance of the Virgin by Stefano Volpi (1630), a Nativity of the Virgin by Alessandro Casolani (1585) and a reliquary of St. Catherine's relics. They are followed by the St. Catherine Chapel, with, in the centre, an altar housing the saint's head and thumb. Il Sodoma provided an Fainting and Ecstasy of St. Catherine and Death of Niccolò di Tuldo for the chapel, while by Francesco Vanni is a St. Catherine's Exorcism (1593-1596). The 15th century marble pavement, featuring Orpheus and animals, is attributed to Francesco di Giorgio.

The original name of this place was Monteficalle, referring to the fig trees that grow in the fields around the castle.

L'ambiente naturale è la prima attrazione della valle, iscritta nei siti Patrimonio dell'Unesco in primis perché testimonianza eccezionale del modo in cui il paesaggio è stato ridisegnato nel Rinascimento per riflettere gli ideali di buon governo e creare un'immagine esteticamente gradevole e poi perché lo stesso paesaggio è stato celebrato dai pittori della Scuola Senese del periodo rinascimentale. Le foto hanno un profilo dolce, spezzato dai cipressi e da casolari solitari, spesso convertiti in agriturismi e relais.

In queste immagini si vede in particolare: La cappella della Madonna di Vitaleta è un edificio sacro che si trova nella località rurale di Vitaleta, nel territorio comunale di San Quirico d'Orcia, in provincia di Siena. La chiesa, di probabile origine tardo-rinascimentale, è ricordata per la prima volta in un documento del 1590. L'edificio religioso venne in seguito riprogettato sia esternamente che internamente dall'architetto Giuseppe Partini nel 1884, ispirandosi a modelli cinquecenteschi.

Altro luogo è la Località Terrapille. Ricorderete il premiatissimo film di Ridley Scott IL GLADIATORE, bene, è su questa collina, che si sono girate le scene del film in cui Massimo ricorda con triste amore la moglie e il suo bimbo uccisi mentre lui era in guerra. I proprietari dell’agriturismo, dicono che, per girare alcune scene sono serviti ben 15 giorni di preparazione, il tutto blindato da guardie del corpo lungo il perimetro della tenuta e la supervisione del luogo avvenne ben due anni prima dall’inizio delle riprese. Famosissima la scena di lui che accarezza il grano sulla collina posta proprio di fronte all’agriturismo e la moglie con il suo bimbo che gli corrono incontro dalla strada con i quattro cipressi !

The natural environment is the first attraction of the valley, inscribed in the UNESCO World Heritage sites (2004) primarily because exceptional example of the way the landscape was redesigned in the Renaissance period to reflect the ideals of good governance and create an aesthetically pleasant and then because the same landscape was celebrated by painters of the Sienese school of the Renaissance period. the photos have a sweet profile, broken by cypresses and solitary farmhouses, often converted into holiday cottages and relays.

In these images we see in particular: The Chapel of Our Lady of Vitaleta is a sacred building is located in the rural town of Vitaleta, in the municipality of San Quirico d'Orcia region, in the province of Siena. The church, probably of the late-Renaissance period, is mentioned for the first time in a document of 1590. The religious building was later redesigned both externally and internally by the architect Giuseppe Partini in 1884, inspired by sixteenth-century models.

Another place is the Location Terrapille. Remember the award-winning film Gladiator by Ridley Scott, well, it is on this hill, that have filmed scenes in the film where Massimo reminds sad love with his wife and his child killed while he was at war. The farm owners, they say, to shoot some scenes are served as many as 15 days of preparation, all shielded by bodyguards around the perimeter of the estate and the supervision of the place took place two years before the start of filming. The famous scene of him caressing the wheat on the hill just placed in front of the farmhouse and the wife with her baby that run towards the road with the four cypress trees!

Monteleone di Orvieto è un antico borgo medioevale posto all’estremo nord della provincia di Terni, arroccato su uno dei colli che separano l’Orvietano da Città della Pieve, da cui si possono ammirare le colline e i monti toscani e laziali e la Valle del Chiani; fu per questa sua posizione strategica che Orvieto, intorno al 1050, decise di insediarvi un castello a guardia dei suoi confini settentrionali.
Dell’originario Castello, saccheggiato e distrutto dai fiorentini nel 1643, oggi rimangono da ammirare la porta di accesso, alla base della Torre mozza, il Torrione con le sue mura di difesa, in Teatro comunale dei “Rustici”, piccolo gioiello architettonico, ricavato nel 1732 da un palazzo medioevale, i vicoli caratteristici, il pozzo medievale, ed altre costruzioni situate nella piazza principale del paese, tutti collocati all'interno del vecchio borgo. Sono inoltre da vedere: la Torre Civica (1890), la Chiesa del SS. Crocifisso (1637), con all’interno un bellissimo altare barocco e la Chiesa dei SS. Apostoli Pietro e Paolo che ha al suo interno un affresco raffigurante una “Madonna con bambino con ai lati i Santi Pietro e Paolo”, una Pietà della scuola di Pietro Vannucci, detto il Perugino, (fine XV secolo) e una Cripta con i resti di San Teodoro Martire.
Monteleone vanta anche altri illustri natali fra i quali: Consiglio Dardalini, mastro vetraio, che nel 1321 fu incaricato da Lorenzo Maitani di provvedere alle necessità di vetri e materiali musivi per l’Opera del Duomo di Orvieto e Piero Bilancini, poeta e scrittore vissuto nell’800 che seguì le orme del Carducci.
