Best Places to Visit in Uruguay
Bordered by Argentina and Brazil, the tiny country of Uruguay is often overlooked by those heading to its bigger neighbors. Uruguay is a country you cannot afford to skip from your Latin America itinerary. It has so much to offer, whether it’s surfing beaches, good wine, stunning scenery, delicious steaks and of course marijuana.

--- Things to do in Montevideo ---
1) Ciudad Vieja
In the video I mentioned a free tour which takes place every friday to discover the old town. Anyway you can also do it on your own! The tourism office next to the town hall provides free maps with all POI and all sights are in walking distance close to each other.
2) City from above
At the tourism office you’re also able to get a free ticket for the terrace at the top of the town hall. Take the elevator and enjoy a great view over Montevideo!
3) Discover the architecture on a walk
You can find an interesting mix of architectural styles in Montevideo – discover them by walking around the innercity, where you’ll also stumble upon nice pieces of Streetart.
4) La Rambla de Montevideo
One of the best things about this city is the promenade along the river. You can find some nice spots along the 22km long “Rambla” to relax or for doing some workout.5
5) Chivito
Food should alway be part of a travel experience. Apart from BBQ/Asado like in the other countries around you can find a sandwich called “Chivito” – it’s the Deal in Uruguay and -of course- it comes with meat ;)

Join us as we reminisce about our past trip through one of South America’s favorite destinations, Montevideo Uruguay!
Montevideo, the capital and the largest city of Uruguay, might as well be called The City of Football, as it hosted all of the matches during the first FIFA World Cup back in 1930. At the same time, this city has been consistently rated as having the highest quality of life in Latin America, so why wouldn’t you pay it a visit?
The first thing you should see in this colorful town is the Rambla, the extensive promenade with numerous parks by the Río de la Plata. However, if you would like to make some beautiful pictures and see how Montevideo looks like from above, go to the free observation deck in the Intendencia Municipal de Montevideo.
Montevideo's Old Town - Ciudad Vieja, Plaza de Independencia, Palacio Salvo, Museo Nacional de Artes Visuales, Museo del Gaucho and Teatro Solís are waiting for curious travelers to explore them.

URUGUAY IN ONE WORD (short version)
Nature, beach, soccer, asado and culture are some of the qualities that define Uruguay according to those who visit us. And for you, what is Uruguay in one word?
Buenos Aires to Montevideo - How to get there
Uruguay is just across the Rio de la Plata from Buenos Aires and well worth a visit. Many people visit Uruguay to enjoy its beautiful coastline, as well as it's cities and towns like Montevideo and Colonia del Sacramento. So how do you get to Montevideo, Uruguay from Buenos Aires, Argentina? Here's how:
One of the most popular ways is by Ferry. Buquebus is one of the main ferry operators between Argentina and Uruguay. The company operates daily crossings from Buenos Aires to both Montevideo and Colonia del Sacramento on the Uruguayan side.
Buquebus also offers bus services to other places along the Uruguayan coast. These include coastal towns like Punta del Este, Piriapolis and La Padrera.
The main Buquebus ferry terminal in Buenos Aires can be found next to the port area of Puerto Madero. Within the main terminal building is a ticket office. You can purchase tickets here or online through the Buquebus website. Ferries run throughout the day and the company also run day trips and excursions to Uruguay.
If you have time on your hands, you could travel 1 hour north of Buenos Aires to Tigre. Here you can catch a ferry to Carmelo in Uruguay. This crossing takes a scenic route past the Tigre Delta.
Another way to get to Uruguay is by coach. To do this you need to go to the main long haul coach terminal in Buenos Aires called Retiro. The journey from Buenos Aires to Montevideo takes approximately 8 hours by bus. Most buses depart late at night arriving early morning in Uruguay. Taking the bus can work out cheaper and can helps avoid delays if bad weather is effecting the ferry crossings.
Finally, a very quick option but usually more expensive, is to fly. There are regular flights from Buenos Aires to Montevideo. Most flights depart and arrive from Jorge Newberry Airport in Buenos Aires. Other flights go from the main international airport of Ezeiza.
Whichever way you cross from Argentina to Uruguay, or visa versa, you are bound to enjoy your time in both.
