The Best of Sweden - BORGHOLM
Borgholm is an urban and former city and the center of the Island Öland.
Borgholm is a popular tourist destination, and its population increases dramatically during the summer months.
In Köpingsvik low during the Viking era a marketplace with ancestry from the 700s. Kalmar is here about 10 km wide and has for centuries been the fairway up in the Baltic Sea. You could soon see when the enemy is approaching, so here was built in various fortification works. Borgholms castle just outside the urban areas burned down in 1806 and has since stood as a ruin.
The name Borgholm found in sources from 1280-century of the same name form today. Borg-inducing considered to cover the old ancient castle which have been on the brink castle location, but a different interpretation argues that it instead aimed at the site's remarkable topography. The significance would be that rock is the correct interpretation, and support for this is found among others in gotländskan which guarantees may mean beach slope or high sands, and mountain-importance has been widely circulated throughout the Ostnor wash area.
1816 was Borgholm city, the only one in Öland and a small city from a nationwide perspective, with only 150 inhabitants. 1906 opened Boda-Borgholms rail and in 1910 opened a railway south towards Mörbylånga and Ottenby; railways were closed in 1962. At the turn of the century began in 1900 tourism to take off, especially after the royal family's residence Solliden completed.

This property is in the Öland village of Kastlösa, by the UNESCO-listed Stora Alvaret limestone barren plain. It offers simple rooms and cottages and a large garden with a playground, a large swimming pool and a smaller children's swimming pool.
Allégården Kastlösa’s cottages feature a dining area, a small furnished terrace and shared bathrooms. Guest rooms have a private toilet, while showers are shared. A fully equipped shared kitchen is available.
Leisure options include a football pitch, a boule court and rental bikes. Guests can buy breakfast on site, and BBQ equipment is provided. Wi-Fi is free in public areas.
Mörbylånga is within 15 minutes’ drive of Allégården Kastlösa Vandrarhem & Stugor. Färjestaden and the Öland Bridge to Kalmar are 15.5 miles away. Staff are happy to organise guided hiking trips and other activities.

Den 20e augusti 1781 gav sig knappt 1000 svenskar iväg från Dagö och började en resa mot Ukraina som skulle ta 9 månader. De gick till fots via Vitryssland och under resans gång kom ungefär en tredjedel av människorna att gå under p g a kyla, matbrist och sjukdom.
Den 1a maj 1782 kom de äntligen fram. Det sägs att deras första ord när de såg sin nya boplats var nu blev vi ordentligt lurade. För inget av det som lovats dem fanns. Inga hus, inget virke och inga förberedda åkrar.
Så börjar historien om Gammalsvenskby - den lilla byn i Ukraina där man än idag pratar svenska. Jag ville se hur livet i byn ser ut idag, så jag begav mig dit med kamera, dagbok och stora pretentioner...
