1. Natural Chimneys Park and Campground Mount Solon
Natural Chimneys, known as the Cyclopean Towers in the 19th century, is a natural rock structure located near Mt. Solon in Augusta County, Virginia in the United States, in the Shenandoah Valley. The formation is a central feature of a regional park owned and operated by Augusta County. The formation includes seven rock chimneys that range in height from 65 to 120 feet above ground level. The chimneys are formed from limestone that began to accumulate and harden into stone about 500 million years ago in the Paleozoic Era, when the region was underwater. Over time, enormous upward pressures of magma and widespread geologic upheaval, which created the Appalachian Mountains, combined with erosive forces of water and destroyed weaker layers of stone. Natural Chimneys at Mt. Solon, Virginia

Located in the upper Shenandoah Valley near the community of Mt. Solon, Virginia, is the Natural Chimneys Regional Park. The property is owned and managed by Augusta County. The namesake of this park are the 500 million year old limestone chimneys. The highest of these towers over 120 feet above ground level. The rock formation was created under the ocean and then pushed up by magma as the Appalachian Mountains were formed. Caves and sinkholes collapsed, and other forces destroyed weaker layers of rock and eventually formed the chimneys as they are today. The park offers many recreational activities.

Fun Fact: every August since 1821, this park hosts one of the largest jousting tournaments in the United States.

Lake Drummond & Great Dismal Swamp National Wildlife Refuge

Great Dismal Swamp National Wildlife Refuge is a 112,000 acre seasonally flooded wetland forest located in southeastern Virginia and northeastern North Carolina. The Dismal Swamp today is only a fraction of its original size. This forest once covered over 1 million acres. It is one of the most important wildlife habitats in the Mid Atlantic region. The over 3000 acre Lake Drummond is located nearly in the center of the refuge. It is one of only two natural lakes in Virginia. The area has a rich human history as well, beginning some 13,000 years ago. During the Civil War, the swamp play a key role in the Underground Railroad. Some slaves stayed in the swamp and formed communities there. They were known as Maroons. Little is actually known about the Maroons. The Great Dismal Swamp could still be hiding many unknown mysteries in this remote and solitary forest.

In this episode, we drive along Railroad Ditch, West Ditch, and the Interior Ditch to view Lake Drummond. We also stop to check out a few short boardwalk hiking trails along the way. Thanks for watching!
