Our goal is to combine recent data, fun videos, and thoughts about local culture into bite-sized snacks of shareable information. We call it bite-sized regional infotainment. We try to paint a picture of what’s happening in a region based on “Friday Night Science” — how’d you argue at a bar. Things to do in West Virginia in Autumn - Fall
We visited West Virginia several times since 2011, and share our thoughts and videos of our favorite places there. Autumn is a great time to visit to see red and yellow foliage.
Dolly Sods is one of our favorite areas in West Virginia. The landscape here is very unique and is similar to Canada. The first video we made about this place can be found here:
In Dolly Sods, you can camp at Red Creek Campground, hike Blackbird Knob or Bear Rocks trail, and see the sunrise at Bear Rocks overlook.
Blackwater Falls State Park is another great place to visit. There are several dramatic overlooks and some waterfall hikes.
Seneca Rocks has expensive campgrounds (we stayed in Seneca Shadows one time), but Spruce Knob is nearby and has campgrounds as well. Spruce Knob has a panoramic overlook of the Canaan valley and there is a fairy tale pine forest on called Huckleberry trail near the peak.
There is a campground called Island Campground that used to be free, and we stayed there twice.
There is also the Green Bank Radio Telescope, which is pretty cool to visit for science nerds.
Snowshoe mountain is a popular ski resort, bus is empty and beautiful during autumn.
We stayed in Tea Creek Campground in the Cranberry Wilderness, and this is our favorite campground in West Virginia! The spaces are huge, and we found one by the river, which is very scenic. There is also a huge apple tree which has delicious fruit that nobody eats.
Babcock State Park has a famous mill that many people have photographed, but we didn’t really like this park or the mill.
The New River Gorge Bridge is a very popular attraction, but was interesting nevertheless.
One of our favorite things was to see the sunrise at Grandview Overlook, as the clouds covered the river and dissipitated quickly with sunlight. We camped in Grandview Sandbar by the river below, which was free the last time we checked.
There is plenty more that we saw that is too much for this video and even more that we didn’t, so please be sure to visit West Virginia and see the state’s unspoiled and unknown beauty for yourself!
