Just fourteen kilometres from Turku is the small, picturesque city of Naantali that is often referred to as Finland’s ‘Summer City’. Its origins, as well as the name, Naantali, are closely connected with a Birgitten monastery that was founded in 1443. Shortly after the creation of the monastery community of monks and nuns a settlement originated close by.For some years the inhabitants of this small city led a relatively frugal life as when the monastery closed so did the income that was derived from it. Naantali’s second financial high season came in the eighteenth century when a professor discovered the healing power of the local spring water. The water of the Viluluoto Spring was thought to have miraculous powers and soon Naantali grew into a famous health resort. The picturesque buildings in the city’s historic centre have been lovingly restored. Most of them date back to the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. In those days many of the buildings were farm houses as their owners earned their living from the land. There is a fascinating abundance of arts and crafts on sale in the many shops that are to be found in the atmospheric lanes of the old town. It is understandable why Naantali is known as Finland’s ‘Summer City’ as well as being a treasure trove of mediaeval history.

Top best places to visit in Turku, Finland
Turku is a city in the Southwest portion of Finland.
It’s an important business and cultural center and it is believed that this is the oldest city in Finland. Turku is also the country’s first capital.
Founded in 13th century and until the great fire in 1827 it was the most important Finnish city.
Turku is located at the mouth of Aura River. The eastern side is popularly referred to as “this side of the river”, while the western side is referred to as “the other side of the river”.
The city center lies on both sides of the river.
On the western side is Market Square with Swedish Theatre, the oldest theater in the country, as well as the Orthodox Church.
And on the eastern side of Aura River is Cathedral the most important religious building in Finland.
To transfer from one side to another you can use the free Fori Ferry.
The trip covers distance of 78m and takes about a minute and a half.
The Finnish name Turku originates from the Old East Slavic word, turgu, meaning “market place”.
Nowadays if you want to visit the real market place go to Turun Kauppahalli.
Another place worth visiting is the Museum of Art, a landmark building visible from many points of the city.
A must for everyone visiting the city and one of the country’s most popular tourist attractions – Turku Castle is the largest surviving medieval building in Finland.
It dates from the 1280s. Highlights include two dungeons and magnificent banquet halls, and historical museum of medieval Turku in a maze of restored rooms in the castle’s old bailey.
Along the banks of Aura river one can find parks with nice views of the city.

The Cathedral and Castle are traditional stops of tourists, but don't forget to grab a sauna and maybe head down to the many bars on the river Aura during the summer. There are numerous parks and restaurants as well.

Turku is the birthplace of Finnish culture. Its success story began in 1229 when it became a bishop’s seat and the Swedish king had a fortress built to protect the city and also to control the power of the Church. Finland was a Swedish province until 1809. Due to its strategic location the city of Turku played an important role. A total of thirteen Swedish kings resided in the city at various times during their visits to the south of Finland and they were well protected by the high towers and mighty walls of its fortress. In 1509 the Danes attacked and plundered various regions of Turku and laid siege to its cathedral for five days and in the eighteenth century the army of the Russian Tsar also ravaged the city. Turku is often referred to as the birthplace of Finnish culture and its historic buildings most certainly provide a fascinating insight into its colourful past.

No hay duda que el mejor sauna del mundo está en Finlandia, una actividad por la cual el país se ha hecho conocido internacionalmente. Experimentar el sauna en Finlandia puede acercarte a la legendaria experiencia del humo (smoke sauna) o de los saunas electricos. En este video veremos saunas en Helsinki, saunas en Nuuksio, Saunas en Hossa y otros rincones finlandeses.
Hay saunas públicos y saunas privados. Se especula mucho sobre cómo usar el sauna pero lo cierto es que aquí mismo en Finlandia las teorías se reducen al mínimo concluyendo en que lo esencial es pasar un rato agradable y disfrutarlo al máximo. Como se ve en el video la experiencia mejora aún más en contacto con la naturaleza sumergiéndose en lagos helados o revolcándose en la nieve.
Contrario a esto, Timo Kaukonen participo de un imprudente reto llevando el sauna extremo a condiciones sobrehumanas, recibiendo algunas lesiones y arriesgando su vida. La noticia llego a los medios y concientizó a la gente sobre el uso razonable.
Fuera de excepciones como esta los beneficios del sauna son mejorar la circulación, mejorar la limpieza del organismo, expulsión de toxinas, bajar de peso.
El sauna desnudo se practica casi como regla general en saunas divididos por genero con excepciones mixtas. En saunas públicos se puede sugerir usar ropa de baño.
