Entry from: Huskvarna, Sweden
Entry Title: THIS is Sweden!
Entry:
If anyone has ever seen a postcard of Sweden, the picture was probably taken here in Huskvarna. This place is amazing, it just can't be real, it's too perfect!
Well I should probably start at the beginning. We left Visby in bleak rain and gloom and got on the ferry to Oskarshamn. We had two cars worth of people to see us off at the harbour which was a lovely surprise and rather sad. We arrived in Oskarshamn and it was still rainy and bleak, got on a bus to Kalmar and it was still rainy and bleak, though the countryside we drove through was beautiful and leafy green. We arrived at Kalmar late at night and it was truly horrible weather, windy and freezing. Luckily our hotel was only a minute away and the room was sooooo cosy and warm and absolutely lovely.
The next day we walked to Kalmar castle which was just across the road and had a look around. It is a pretty chunky castle on the outside but inside it was stunning! The ceilings were the best bit, each was different and incredibly ornate. Our necks got very sore looking up all the time, but it was worth it. There were huge tapestries and amazing wood panneling on the walls and a couple of the rooms had secret doors leading to private toilets. The prison section was very creepy and dungeony and there were rocks that had been pulled out of the walls showing how some of the prisoners had tried to escape.
Later that day we caught another bus to Jönköping (pronounced Yn-sherping) where Emelie picked us up and took us to her place in Kaxholmen which is a gorgeous little village just outside Huskvarna. Almost as soon as we arrived we went for a walk through the forest near Emelie's house. She showed us the places she used to play as a kid and the wildflowers she used to pick. It was amazing, we never knew that forests so green and beautiful actually exist outside of fairytales. The next day Emelie drove us to Gränna, a little town north of here which is famous for peppermint lollies. It is a really cute little town and in most of the lolly shops we could watch them making the stuff and see how it's done. As we left one of the shops Pete started raving about how good looking the candymaker had been. I went back and got some pictures of him working so Pete could look at him any time, but he said the pictures didn't do the guy justice and deleted them. So too bad, you don't get to see the hansom candyman ;)
After that we drove towards a town called Vadstena and on the way stopped at a ruin of an old Convent and Monastery from the 1100's. It was the best ruin we have seen so far, beautiful and surrounded by green farmland with a backdrop of a tree covered hill. At Vadstena we looked at the castle there and the Abbey as well as all the antique and second hand shops anywhere nearby. The old stuff here is different from the old stuff at home so it was heaps of fun to sift through all the weird objects and ask Emelie what they are. Old objects are Emelie's specialty so it was fun to see what got her excited.
Yesterday we went for a bike ride into Huskvarna and had a look at the Husqvarna museum. For those of you who don't know, Husqvarna make the best sewing machines ever! They started off making guns for the Swedish army and then moved into sewing machines and then stoves and other appliances, chainsaws and motorbikes and all sorts of other fun stuff. The museum was great, they didn't have an example of my sewing machine but they had some close so I guess I can forgive them for now!
Here in Sweden they eat green cakes called Princess Cakes for their birthdays for some reason. They are sponge cakes with custardy cream and green marzipan icing and always with one little pink flower on top. We have only had store bought ones so far so we decided we needed to make one.
