Black River - South Jean: 'Lost' Canoe Route
Leah and I headed to the Algonquin Highlands for the May long weekend to rediscover and open a lost canoe route. The route starts off over a well traveled area before descending down the rarely paddled Black River where we were greeted by plenty of wildlife including moose, otters, beavers and muskrats. The great unknown was the series of portages connecting the Black to South Jean Creek and back to the Frost Centre. Thankfully the old portages (disused since the early 90's) were mostly intact and we only had to bushwhack a few short sections. A longer but (straightforward) portage can skip the bushwhack. We can safely conclude that the lost canoe route has been found and you should add it to your list of routes to do! This seldom traveled area avoids the crowds and even contains some brief sections of easy whitewater.
