The Carnival Fountain in Mainz is located on the Schillerplatz on the corner Schillerstraße / Ludwigsstraße . The monument is supposed to symbolize the foolish season . After three years of construction, it was unveiled on January 14, 1967 under great interest of the Mainz population.
In 1963, the city of Mainz inquired of a small circle of industrialists whether there was a willingness to found a new carnival monument for the city, which was still marked by war damage. The beverage company Eckes AG from Nieder-Olm under Ludwig Eckes followed this request.
Following an invitation to tender for a competition, the draft of the Munich artist and professor Blasius Spreng was selected from among 234 suggestions . He had also designed numerous other monuments in post-war Germany . The jury was chaired by the painter and sculptor Ewald Mataré . The design was the result of a collaboration between Spreng and Mainz architect Helmut Gräf .
The Carnival Fountain is an almost nine meter high, bronze and tower-like representation, which is provided with more than 200 also bronze figures and allegories . Father Rhine , the monk , the fool with his attributes , the harlequin and the man with the board in front of his head , the cat, Till Eulenspiegel , the Hanswurst and the city goddess Moguntia , the purse-catcher , vagabonds , Schwellköpp or buffoons and jugglersThese are just some of the motifs that have a strong connection to the history of Mainz and carnival history . Also grapevines as well as Weck, Worscht and Woi are represented.
The donkey rider is not - as often assumed - a paragraph rider. He would not need to ride backwards on a donkey with his cock in his hand, rather, the picture is indicative of a fine of past centuries. The Narrenzunft in Rottweil imposed this punishment on men who let themselves be beaten by their wives. The paragraph symbol serves only to clarify the punitive character. [1]
Overall, the fool tower is on top, the scope tapers to the foot. The symbolism is intended to indicate the labile happiness of the fools. This also means that the joie de vivre that is to be symbolized by this monument is something lasting. Furthermore, the fountain symbolizes during the carnival time upside down Mainz Cathedral . This is particularly well recognizable from the west side of the Schillerplatz with a view over the Carnival Fountain to the cathedral.
Enclosed is the fountain with a basin round of red sandstone, which was designed by Helmut Gräf. The Carnival Fountain, together with the Schiller Monument on the opposite side, limits the Schillerplatz to other smaller works of art with carnival cover, old tree stands and large flower borders. For the population of Mainz, the well still has a high acceptance. The Carnival Fountain is an almost nine meter high, bronze and tower-like representation, which is provided with more than 200 also bronze figures and allegories .
