In the video I am in the capital city of Suriname called Paramaribo. I drive to a place called Fort Nieuw Amsterdam. I didn't realize the fortress was a little boring. I had some traffic, so I needed to speed up the video in some parts of the video.

10. Suriname Mosque
The largest Mosque in the Caribbean is Mosque Keizerstraat, located in Paramaribo. It is a beautiful building with stunning gardens around it. No machinery was used during construction and thus it took 20 years to complete. Not only is it an impressive place of worship it’s unique because of its next door neighbour, the Nevah Shalom Synagogue.
9. Presidential Palace of Suriname
Located in the capital across from Independence Square, the presidential palace is one of the best examples of Dutch colonial architecture in Suriname. Part of the inner city’s UNESCO World Heritage designation, it was built in the 18th century, and is still the presidents home.
8. Arya Dewaker
This Hindu temple is the largest in Suriname and is located in Paramaribo. It’s arguably the most important in the country to the 30,000+ Hindu’s who live there. Designed by a Dutch architect, the building is a two-story octagonal building with meeting rooms, a library, and ceremony room.
7. Joden Savanne
ust south of Paramaribo, on the Suriname River, is Joden Savanne, or Jews’ savannah. Established in the 17th century, it was originally an agricultural community that was developed by Spanish Jews fleeing persecution. Sugarcane plantations were the main crop and slaves were used here for a long time.
6. Brownsberg Nature Park
Roughly 80 miles from Paramaribo you’ll find the Brownsberg Nature Park. It’s 500 metres above sea level and was established in 1969. It’s mostly neotropical rainforest and is home to hundreds of unique and rare plant and animal species.
5. Commewijne River
All along the Commewijne River, you’ll find old plantation properties as well as cacao, coffee, and sugar cane facilities. A tourist favourite is to rent a bike for the day and cycle the well-maintained routes around the plantations. Though, the most popular route to cross the river from Paramribo is by water taxi. They mostly take you to Frederiksdorp, an old restored plantation that is now a hotel and restaurant.
4. Nieuw Nickerie
This busy border town was once one of the country’s main balata collecting centres. These days the port remains active and the economy is served by the banana and rice plantations here. If you’re hoping to explore Bigi Pan, a swamp and reservoir with over 100 bird varieties, Nieuw Nickerie is the last stop before Guyana.
3. Central Suriname Nature Reserve
The largest of Suriname’s nature reserves, Central Suriname covers about 12% of the country’s total land mass and 40% of the plants and animals here are to be found only in the Guianas. One of the most beautiful attractions in the reserve is Raleighvallen, Raleigh Falls. It’s a long and low staircase of water that cascades down from the Coppename River.
2. Galibi Coppename Nature Reserve
This lovely nature reserve was established in 1969 and is situated at the mouth of the Coppename River. It’s a haven for birdwatchers, home to the endangered manatee, and attracts hundreds of turtles during laying season (April to August). STINASU, The Foundation for Nature Conservation in Suriname, organizes several tours to and through the reserve.

If you could combine the American Wild West with Amsterdam, you’d get Paramaribo. A high energy city filled with things to see and do, it’s the most incredible capital in the Guianas. Roam around the inner city, a designated UNESCO World Heritage Site, and discover grassy squares lined with black and white Dutch colonial buildings, have lunch at one of the many Indian roti shops, and buy a few pieces of artwork from the Maroon artists selling their art outside the old Dutch forts.

Commewijne river cruise - Orange Travel Suriname
The Commewijne River cruise is a historical boat trip on the Commewijne River with the main attraction being a visit to Plantation Frederiks Dorp to admire the most beautiful restored plantation houses. We also visit Fort Nieuw Amsterdam, an open air museum and other plantations. On the way back there is an opportunity for dolphin spotting.

Ligging
Commewijne is gelegen op de rechteroever van de Surinamerivier, direct ten oosten van Paramaribo. Commewijne wordt in het noorden begrensd door de Atlantische Oceaan, in het westen door de districten Paramaribo en Wanica, in het zuiden door het district Para en in het oosten door het district Marowijne. De hoofdplaats is Nieuw-Amsterdam.
Welke plantages en gebieden doet u o.m. aan?
U vaart langs de volgende plantages waarbij sommige worden bezocht: Reynsdorp te Bakkie, Magrita, Rust en Werk (veehouderij), Frederiksdorp, Landgoed Mariënbosch, en Kroonenburg. Verder vaart u door de Lotus Vallei en bezoekt u Braamspunt en Matapica aan de Atlantische oceaan.
Frederiksdorp
Frederiksdorp is een voormalige koffie- en cacaoplantage. De eerste eigenaar was een Duitser uit Pruisen, Johan Friedrich Knöffel aan wie de plantage tot op heden zijn naam te danken heeft. Frederiksdorp is het centrum van rechteroever van de Commewijnerivier.
Landgoed Mariënbosch
De vroegere cacaoplantage Mariënbosch is gelegen naast plantage Frederiksdorp. Deze plantage is vooral de laatste tijd bekend geworden door de speelfilm “Tuintje in mij hart”. De woning op het landgoed werd gebouwd in 1774, het jaartal is in baksteen gefigureerd in de betegelde stoep voor het huis.
Reynsdorp te Bakkie
Bakkie is een dorp en ressort gelegen aan de rivier Commewijne. Omstreeks 1902 werd de koffieplantage Reijnsdorp aangekocht door het gouvernement en verkaveld in kleinlandbouwpercelen voor immigranten die hun contract hadden uitgediend. Zo is het dorpje Bakkie of Baki ontstaan. In het jaar 2000 was het een van de weinige nog bewoonde plaatsen langs de rivier. Sinds 2007 is Bakkie in ontwikkeling. Sinds enkele jaren is er ook een museum te Bakkie.
Magrita
Magrita was een plantage aan de Commewijnerivier. Hij lag links bij het opvaren, stroomafwaarts naast plantage Elisabeth's Hoop en stroomopwaarts naast plantage Buitenrust. De plantage werd als een koffieplantage aangelegd door Johan Friederich Knöffel, de eigenaar van plantage Frederiksdorp, die naast Buitenrust lag.
In 1903 werd het aangekocht als vestigingsplaats voor kleine landbouwers. Om de bewoning te bevorderen werd 30 hectare ingericht als rijstpolder voor de daar wonende Javanen.
Kroonenburg
Kroonenburg is een voormalige koffieplantage en ligt aan de rechteroever van de rivier de Commewijne, tussen de plantages Brouwerslusten Rijnberk.
Tegenwoordig is de plantage als dorpsgemeente nog in gebruik. Er wordt door de lokale bevolking veel groenten en fruit verbouwd voor de plaatselijke markt. Op dit moment worden er op een aantal bedden onder meer tamarinde, noni (didibri-apra), bospapaya, peper en palm verbouwd.
Rust en Werk
Rust en Werk was een koffieplantage aan de Commewijnerivier. De plantage is in 1750 aangelegd door Wigbold Crommelin, die in 1749 als commandeur der troepen in Suriname was gearriveerd. Vanaf 1752 tot 1754 fungeerde hij als gouverneur ad interim en in 1757 werd hij officieel benoemd als gouverneur. Ook de naastgelegen plantages Lust tot Rust en Einde Rust werden op hetzelfde moment door hem aangelegd. Tegenwoordig is hier een grote veehouderij gevestigd die overigens wordt bezocht.
Braamspunt
Braamspunt is een zandtong aan de kust van Suriname. Het is de uiterste westpunt van het district Commewijne in de gemeenschappelijke uitmonding van de Suriname en de Commewijne. De punt heeft in de loop der tijd afwisselende perioden van kustafslag en aanslibbing gekend. Anno 2015 is Braamspunt door de overheid aangewezen als bijzonder beheersgebied omdat het van belang is voor bepaalde vogelsoorten en zeeschildpadden.
Lotus Vallei
De Lotus Vallei is een prachtig gebied waar u vaart door waterlelies (pankuku’s). Het is de vaarroute naar het kustgebied van Matapica.
Matapica
Matapica is een kustgebied dat grenst aan de Atlantische Oceaan. Het staat bekend als leggebied van beschermde zeeschildpadsoorten en valt onder het Noord-Commewijne/Marowijne Bijzonder Beheersgebied van de Stichting Natuurbehoud Suriname

Half day in Commewijne River | SURINAME |
Our first outing in Suriname was to Commewijne River, where we sailed to Frederiksdorp Plantation. We did a few stops in the river to Rust & Werk and for dolphins spotting.

Visiting the Amazon Rainforest in Suriname
Suriname is probably the most bizarre country I've ever been to. It's culturally and geographically unique - I did lots of cool things including cayman spotting in the Amazon, visiting the Maroon villages and drinking parbo on the waterkant.
