Barcelona's Virgin hits the streets!

A video of the procession of the Virgen de la Merce (Our Lady of Mercy) from Barcelona Cathedral around the streets of the Gothic Quarter of Barcelona on 16 September 2012.

This 2012 procession was led Msgr. Jordi Farré Wall, accompanied by Dr. Pujals-Vicar Delegate of the Prelature of Opus Dei in Catalonia and Father Victor Barrallo Philip. At the Cathedral the processio0n was met by Dr. Guner John, Dean of the Chapter. Members of the Brotherhood of Our Lady of Mercy and representatives of the orders of the Holy Sepulchre and St George Constantine accompanied the procession and carried the Virgen. The local police provided musical accompaniment.

Les Festes de la Mercè, the Merce Festival, is Barcelona's biggest annual festival and is the celebration of María de las Mercedes (Mary of Mercies) better known to non Spaniards as the Virgin Mary, and who is one of the Patron Saint's of Barcelona. She is also called La Mare de Deu de la Mercè, meaning Mother of God of Mercy or Virgin de La Mercè -- Virgin of Mercy or Nuestra Señora de la Merced (Spanish) which means Our Lady of Mercy - or La Mercè for short. Mercè in Catalan / Merced in Spanish, mean mercy in English.
