The city of Joensuu is the capital of North Karelia. North Karelia is renowned among public health officials. In the 1960s Finland led industrialized nations in heart disease mortality rates; North Karelia had Finland's highest incidence. In 1972 a long-term project was undertaken which targeted this risk in North Karelia. The resulting improvement in public health is still considered remarkable, a model for the rest of the nation.

    Joensuu is a city and municipality in North Karelia in the province of Eastern Finland. It was founded in 1848. The population of Joensuu is 76,228 , and the economic region of Joensuu has a population of 115,000. As is typical of cities in Eastern Finland, Joensuu is monolingually Finnish. Joensuu is a lively student city with a subsidiary of the University of Eastern Finland, which has over 15,000 enrolled students, and a further 4,000 students at the Karelia University of Applied Sciences.The largest employers are the municipal City of Joensuu, North Karelian Hospital District Federation of Municipalities, Abloy and Punamusta. The European Forest Institute, the University and many other institutes and export enterprises such as Abloy and John Deere give Joensuu an international flavour.

    Nurmes is a town and municipality of Finland. It was located in the former province of Eastern Finland until 2010 and is now in the North Karelia region. The town has a population of 7,675 and covers an area of 1,854.78 square kilometres of which 253.7 km2 is water. The population density is 4.79 inhabitants per square kilometre . Neighbouring municipalities are Juuka, Kuhmo, Lieksa, Rautavaara, Sotkamo and Valtimo. Nurmes railway station is the northern terminus of a twice-daily VR passenger train service from Joensuu; The service has been under threat of closure but is currently part of rail services that ministry of transportation requires VR to run in exchange for monopoly in more attractive routes and this agreement is currently valid until December 2019.
