It stretches between Lake Merritt in the northwest and San Leandro in the southeast. The area is a major hub of Northern California's black community, with over 50% of East Oakland's inhabitants being black. According to figures from a 2000 U.S. Census, over 87,000 people reside in the East Oakland area.
