Onanole is a unincorporated hamlet within the Municipality of Harrison Park in Manitoba, Canada. Onanole is located in southwest Manitoba, at the south entrance to Riding Mountain National Park. It sits roughly 105 km due north of the city of Brandon, and 135 km east of the Saskatchewan border. The community was first recognized when a post office opened in 1928, with Neil W. Tracy as postmaster. The name was suggested by Tracy, after the Onanole Hotel in the Adirondack Mountains in northeastern New York, similarly situated on a knoll.

Riding Mountain National Park is a national park in Manitoba, Canada. The park sits atop the Manitoba Escarpment. Consisting of a protected area 2,969 km2 , the forested parkland stands in sharp contrast to the surrounding prairie farmland. It was designated a national park because it protects three different ecosystems that converge in the area; grasslands, upland boreal and eastern deciduous forests. It is most easily reached by Highway 10 which passes through the park. The south entrance is at the townsite of Wasagaming, which is the only commercial centre within the park boundaries.

Spruce Woods Provincial Park is located in south-central Manitoba, Canada where the Assiniboine River passes through the delta of sediment left by the last glaciation. An area of open and stabilized sand dunes within the park provides habitat to species of plants and animals not found elsewhere in Manitoba. In descending order of land area contained, the park lies within the Rural Municipalities of South Cypress, Victoria, and North Cypress. The Government of Manitoba designated the area a provincial park in 1964. The park is 269 square kilometres in size. The park is considered to be a Class II protected area under the IUCN protected area management categories.

Fort La Reine was built in 1738 and is one of the forts of the western expansion directed by Pierre Gaultier de Varennes et de La Vérendrye, first military commander in the west of what is now known as Canada. Located on the Assiniboine River where present day Portage la Prairie, Manitoba, stands, the fort served as a fur trading post. It was also the base of operations for much exploration north and west. From Fort La Reine, explorers made their way to Lake Manitoba and Lake Winnipegosis, Lake Winnipeg and the Saskatchewan River. Louis-Joseph Gaultier de La Vérendrye, the youngest La Vérendrye son, led expeditions from Fort La Reine and built the following western installations in what is now Manitoba: Fort Dauphin, Fort Bourbon, and Fort Paskoya. We travel from Saskatoon to Yorkton for a family reunion and then to Onanole Campground where we charge with 100% solar electrons.

Hiking @ Riding Mountain National Park + Wasagaming // Road Trip 2019

We saw 2 moose and a baby bear!! First time seeing both, really exciting and memorable. We also saw countless deer, and had our eyes peeled for an elk but didn't catch any. Riding Mountain National Park is really a great place to see wildlife, right from the road as you pull over and sit in your car. Really great!

The next morning, we took a short 9.2km hike, and then checked out Wasagaming. The hike was fairly uneventful but it only took 3 hours. Afterwards, Wasagaming was a real surprise. We've never seen a small town with restaurants and attractions for kids in a National Park before. The beach was full of families and people of all ages enjoying the sun on the Canada Day long weekend.

All in all, Riding Mountain was a great stop on our road trip! Now on to Saskatchewan!
