Oostduinkerke is a place in the Belgian province of West Flanders, where it is located on the southern west coast of Belgium, so that part of it is a seaside resort. Once a municipality of its own, Oostduinkerke now is a sub-municipality in the municipality of Koksijde. The name Oostduinkerke translates as 'East Dunkirk'. The town originally shared its name with the French city of Dunkirk; therefore, in the 13th century, 'Oost-' was added to its name to avoid confusion with its French counterpart. Pairi Daiza is a privately owned zoo and botanical garden located in Brugelette in the province of Hainaut, Belgium. The 65-hectare large animal theme park is located on the site of the former Cistercian Cambron Abbey, and is home to over 4,000 animals. The name is taken from the Avestan word pairi daēza, which is the source of the [Persian language] word paradise. Pairi Daiza is owned and operated by Pairi Daiza Belgium SA, a limited company previously listed on NYSE Alternext Brussels . It is a member of the European Association of Zoos and Aquaria , and participates in the European Endangered Species Programme .

Shrimp Fishing on Horseback for 700 Years

For nearly 700 years, the shrimpers of Oostduinkerke, Belgium, have been training draft horses to help them pursue the local catch. Typically weighing more than 2,000 pounds, these horses are well suited to the task of carrying fishermen through the cold waters of the North Sea. Yet despite its historical importance, Oostduinkerke is the last place on Earth to use this traditional form of fishing. Currently, just 19 or so fishermen continue the practice.

Shrimp fishermen in Oostduinkerke on purefoodtravel.com

During my last visit to the Flemish coast it was a good time to see the shrimp fishermen. They only fish when it's low tide. So they have to plan their fishing dates and time. The fishermen use draft horses, mostly Brabantian or Ardennes breed. These peaceful and strong animals weigh about 1,000 kilograms and are perfect for the hard work of shrimp fishing. Read more on

Bayernwald Trenches
Croonaert Wood was one of the sites used by German units to defend the area around the Ypres Salient. The Germans built a defensive complex of trenches, dugouts and bunkers on the slightly elevated landscape, from which artillery observers had an excellent view of the ground around Wijtschate and Ypres. The location was called Bayernwald by German soldiers due to the fact that the first German soldiers to be stationed there were from Bavaria (Bayern in German).

The area was the site of extensive mining activity by both German and British units during the war. Before the Battle of Messines, the tunnelling companies of the Royal Engineers placed a large mine around the German strongpoint Günther, not far from the Bayernwald trenches.
