Pangnirtung is an Inuit hamlet, Qikiqtaaluk Region, in the Canadian territory of Nunavut, located on Baffin Island. As of the 2016 census the population was 1,481, an increase of 3.9% from the 2011 census. The area of the town is 7.77 km2 . Pangnirtung is situated on a coastal plain at the coast of Pangnirtung Fjord, a fjord which eventually merges with Cumberland Sound. As of January 2014, the mayor is Mosesee Qappik.

1. Auyuittuq National Park Pangnirtung
Auyuittuq National Park is a national park located on Baffin Island's Cumberland Peninsula, Qikiqtaaluk Region in Nunavut, the largest political subdivision of Canada. It features many terrains of Arctic wilderness, such as fjords, glaciers, and ice fields. Although Auyuittuq was established in 1976 as a national park reserve, it was upgraded to a full national park in 2000. Little vegetation can be found in Auyuittuq Park, although the plants found there range from flowers such as mountain avens, campion, Papaver, and saxifrage to shrubs like dwarf birch, Arctic willow, and heather. Many of the plants in Auyuittuq Park grow in clumps to create their own warmer microclimate to survive the harsh Arctic conditions. Nunavut 2014 (Pt. 11) - Bucket List Dream Come True

November 20, 2014 - I've had a bucket list of travel destinations for some time, and on this today, I crossed off what I considered to be the toughest things to accomplish: travel to Nunavut. Being the most remote part of Canada, only a lot of money and a darn good reason would get me here. Once Sophie took a job up here in Rankin Inlet for a few months, that was enough reason to go.

The free room/board while up there was nice, too. Welcome to The Nu!

I was even more officially welcomed later that night when the Aurora Borealis showed up for the first time.

Iceberg and polar bear encounter off Baffin Island, Canada

A close encounter with a hauntingly beautiful tabular iceberg off Baffin Island, Navy Board Inlet (between Bylot and Baffin Islands). Tabular icebergs are flat slabs that have carved off glaciers - in this case further north, possibly from Lancaster Sound, but more likely from the 16 or so outlet glaciers lying to the north of Navy Inlet and on Baffin Island's East coast (this publication details the glaciers there:

The iceberg is in the 'large' category (so the second biggest of the official sizes) - it must be about 1KM long and is about 80 metres or so high - containing at least ten million tons of slowly melting ice. It seemed grounded in the relatively shallow Navy Board Inlet but must have floated here from at least fifty miles further north where it broke off the glacier. The compressed snow in this iceberg is 15,000 years old and a remnant from the last ice age!

The polar bear mother and cub were seen further south on brash ice about 40km from shore. They were interested in us but we were in the safety of the big ship!
