Mount Maunganui, or Mauao, commonly known by locals as The Mount, is an extinct volcanic cone at the end of a peninsula and the town of Mount Maunganui, by the eastern entrance to the Tauranga Harbour in New Zealand. It is considered very important and tapu by the local Māori iwi, featuring extensively in local mythology. It is also of significant historical value. The summit is 232 metres above sea level. In recent years there have been several fires on the mountain, in turn triggering a number of replanting efforts. Since Mount Maunganui has been open to the general public it has become a popular location for many activities including scenic walks, jogging and even hang gliding.

Mount Maunganui Māori pronunciation: [ˈmaʉŋaˌnʉi], locally is a major residential, commercial and industrial suburb of Tauranga, located on a peninsula to the north-east of Tauranga's city centre. It was an independent town from Tauranga until the completion of the Tauranga Harbour Bridge in 1988, which connects Mount Maunganui to Tauranga's central business district. Mount Maunganui is also the name of the large lava dome which was formed by the upwelling of rhyolite lava about two to three million years ago. It is officially known by its Māori name Mauao, but is colloquially known in New Zealand simply as The Mount.

Mount Maunganui - There's No Place Like HomeA short film that I have created, filmed and edited that took me 7 weeks to complete,
It's purpose is to showcase and capture my perspective of Mount Maunganui and see it through my eyes.
Capturing some of our local talents, as well as the beautiful mauao, the landscape, the beach and the summer lifestyle.
With this film i am able to share my view, connect and work with people with the same goals.

So this is Mauao, also known as The Mount, an extinct volcanic cone at the end of the peninsula north-east of Tauranga's city center, just look at it towering over the town of Mt Maunganui. There are various scenic walks you can take to the summit, 232 meters above sea level. Its a very popular destination so I will recommend to start your walk very early.People flock to the summit for various reasons, fitness seemed to be a very popular reason, but I was attracted here by a photo I've seen, taken from the summit overlooking Mt Maunganui. It was breath taking and I just had to see it for myself.
So we made it to the summit, and its finally time to search for the least obstructed view to get my shot, and there it is... a little path going down to a cliff edge, but let me just warn you, to get there is scary, the path is steep and brittle, making it very slippery with noting stopping you from falling over the edge!
The views over Mt Maunganui is really awesome and well worth the effort.
Going down we took the shorter route, it has way more stairs but the views... surely makes up for it!

Mount Maunganui is situated in the Bay of Plenty, In New Zealand North Island. It's only a 1-hour drive from Rotorua and 3-hours from Auckland. Here we describe 7 activities for The Mount:
Activity 1: Hike to the summit of Mauao.
At 232 meters tall, this free walk is a top experience. Diverse walking tracks will bring you to the top of this extinct volcano.
Several historical fortified villages were built here as well. And many walking trails today are actually the evidence you still can see. There’s a summit track which is 3.8 km long and takes around 45 minutes to complete. There are even old tracks that are closed down. The summit walk itself is a hard walk but not impossible.
Rewarding you with the best views over the Bay of Plenty.
Activity 2: Explore the peninsula.
Watch surfers in action at this amazing setting and spot wild sea lions in their habitat. Resulting in great wild encounters and beautiful pictures. This place gives you a real opportunity
to experience life at a paradise.

With enough shops, bars, and restaurants, it’s a perfect place to hang out and have fun.

In high season, many accommodations will be booked out fast. This is a very popular holiday destination for locals with prices to stay here going up crazy... Papamoa, is a town close by with more accommodation available If you really can’t find something you can also try out this place. Also, Tauranga, which is only 10 minutes away offers accommodation for travelers.
