The area was annexed by the town of Port Royal on October 11, 2002.It is perhaps best known for its U.S. Marine Corps training facility Marine Corps Recruit Depot Parris Island, where about 16,000 Marines pass through boot camp every year.

Parris Island Museum - Marine Corps & South Carolina Local History

We were at Parris Island to see our son graduate as part of Kilo Company, 3rd Recruit Bataillion. But he told us that we HAD to visit the Parris Island Museum while we were there. I am so glad we did as it was extremely impressive. We visited the National WWII Museum earlier this year and this was on par in their displays. So great and I loved seeing the history of the Corps of which my son is now a part. Semper Fi!!

Super excited to take you to Parris Island to see how United States Marines are made! I went on July 4th and things were fairly quiet but it gave me a great opportunity to really show you what a beautiful island it is despite all the intense training that goes on there. It has been in use since 1915 and the Marines train about 17,000 recruits each year. This is a good one ya’ll.

Recruits of Delta Company, 1st Recruit Training Battalion, and Papa Company, 4th Recruit Training Battalion, arrive at Marine Corps Recruit Depot Parris Island, S.C.

Recruits arrive at Parris Island late at night and are immediately thrust into the stressful whirlwind of in-processing, platoon assignment, haircuts, uniform and gear issue and medical evaluations. They would also have an opportunity to make their first phone call home. This is the last time they'll talk to their families for three months.

Congratulations to the new 665 Marines from Kilo & November Companies at MCRD Parris Island. We were such proud parents to witness our son on this huge accomplishment as we know, or at least we think we know, how much went into the completion of this 13 week bootcamp. Semper Fi!

Belfast WMA

The Belfast Wildlife Management Area (WMA) is a 4,664-acre tract located ten miles northwest of Newberry on Highway 56 near the Kinards community. The property is situated on the Newberry/ Laurens County line, with most of the land area in Newberry County. Col. John Simpson of Belfast, Ireland, settled the land in 1786. The historic Belfast Plantation house, located in Laurens County, was built by Col. Simpson in the early 1800's.

Champion Paper Company formerly owned this property, followed by International Paper Company. Champion Paper Company maintained the area for recreation and forest products production for many years and their regional headquarters was located here.

Upland pine forests and hardwood drains are found throughout the property. Wildlife plantings are located along power lines and road edge openings within the tract. Wildlife management practices include pine thinning and prescribed burns. All land management activities are conducted according to Best Management Practices as prescribed by the SC Forestry Commission. Forest management emphasis is on wildlife habitat improvement.

Wildlife game species present include deer, turkey, rabbit, squirrel, dove, quail and raccoon. Other furbearer species found here include fox, bobcat and coyote. Many songbirds, raptors, reptiles and amphibians occur on the area. Plants in hardwood drains include most species common to the piedmont. Plant and animal diversity in the pine stands will be increased through timber thinning and prescribed fire.

This WMA is open for public use throughout the year except during drawn hunts. Deer and turkey hunting is by drawing only, with some special hunts for youth and mobility-impaired participants. Applications are available by calling 803-734-3886. Deer and turkey hunters who are selected are required to check in and check out at the Belfast House. Regulations for other hunting activities can be found in the SCDNR Rules and Regulation brochure. All adult hunters must have a valid hunting license and a WMA permit.

Fishing is by special event permit only.

This area is closed to horses and ATVs.
