Mayon , also known as Mayon Volcano or Mount Mayon, is an active stratovolcano in the province of Albay in Bicol Region, on the large island of Luzon in the Philippines. Renowned as the perfect cone because of its symmetric conical shape, the volcano with its surrounding landscape was declared a national park on July 20, 1938, the first in the nation. It was reclassified a Natural Park and renamed as the Mayon Volcano Natural Park in 2000. Local folklore refers to the volcano being named after the legendary princess-heroine Daragang Magayon . Numerous festivals and rituals are associated with the volcano and its landscape. The volcano is the centerpiece of the Albay Biosphere Reserve, declared by UNESCO in 2016.

Mount Pinatubo is an active stratovolcano in the Zambales Mountains, located on the tripoint boundary of the Philippine provinces of Zambales, Tarlac and Pampanga, all in Central Luzon on the northern island of Luzon. Mount Kalatungan, also known as Catatungan, is a volcanic mountain located in the province of Bukidnon in the southern Philippines. It is a stratovolcano with no known historical eruptions and classified by the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology as a potentially active volcano. It is the sixth highest mountain in the country with an elevation of 2,824 m asl. It is one of the several high elevation peaks in the Kalatungan Mountain Range in Bukidnon on the island of Mindanao, the second largest island in the Philippines.

- Ever since we secured positions at an NGO in Tacloban, we have been dreaming about traveling through the Philippines. I’ve made countless Pinterest boards filled with gorgeous photos of the many islands and Jules has been scouting out the best surf spots.

- For some unknown reason, the Philippines seems to be off the normal tourist trail for backpackers traveling through Southeast Asia. The extra cost to fly over may deter people, but we think it’s a shame that this gorgeous country isn’t on most backpacker’s radar. Hopefully, during our 6 months here we can show the world what the Philippines has to offer.
