Golf at the Mountain View Grand - Whitefield, NH
Course Description: This challenging, mountain golf course was designed and built in 1900 by Ralph Barton, a professor of Mathematics at Dartmouth College and renowned golf architect of the early 20th century. The course was renovated in 1999, when extensive work to the greens, tee boxes and course hazards allowed it to recapture its original grandeur. The course sits on a beautiful country hillside affording fabulous views of four distinct mountain ranges. Two ponds were added on the fifth hole in 2009.

History and Anecdotes: On a rainy night in 1865, a stagecoach en route from Boston to Montreal hit a large mudhole and overturned on a back road in the small town of Whitefield, NH. Two passengers climbed out and were told by the driver to follow the dirt road a half mile until they reached a farmhouse. Despite the late hour, the travelers were welcomed at the home of William and Mary Jane Dodge, thus beginning a long tradition of Mountain View hospitality. Over the years Mountain View has welcomed distinguished guests such as Mark Twain, Babe Ruth, Bette Davis, the Marx brothers, Presidents Richard Nixon and FDR, Stephen King, Neil Armstrong, and Michelle Obama. The hotel was closed for 16 years before being purchased in 1998, and refurbished to open in 2002 as Mountain View Grand Resort, after completion of a $20 million restoration. The resort is 100% wind-powered and a member of Historic Hotels of America.
