Ningxia , officially the Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region , is an autonomous region of the People's Republic of China located in the northwest part of the country. Formerly a province, Ningxia was incorporated into Gansu in 1954 but was separated from Gansu in 1958 and was reconstituted as an autonomous region for the Hui people, one of the 56 officially recognised nationalities of China. Heavy Snow Hits Ningxia in northwest China

Heavy snow and sleet brought on by a cold spell in late spring has hit most areas of Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region in northwest China on Saturday.

Ningxia Observatory issued a yellow alert as the accumulated snow reached between four to seven millimeters on Saturday morning.

The capital city, Yinchuan, was entirely enveloped in snow. Drivers had to travel with caution with many reducing their speed and using their headlights due to slippery roads.

Accumulated snow was above six millimeters in south of Shizuishan City and most areas of Yinchuan. The snow in other areas along the Helan Mountain, Helan County and the Shahu Lake in Pingluo County had reached more than 10 millimeters

Meteorologists say snow in the above areas will last until Sunday afternoon or evening.

All the expressways and airport were in normal operation so far.
