Today we are joining some locals on a Waioeka River canoe trip. The Waioeka River runs into Opotiki and we start our Opotiki canoe trip in the Waioeka Gorge. This is a Bay of Plenty canoe trip that (at the moment) you can only do with locals. This is a great example of meeting locals in New Zealand.
You may have heard of the Whanganui Journey - canoeing on the Whanganui River, well this canoe trip in New Zealand is an amazing alternative situated in the Bay of Plenty region.
So what do you think of canoeing in New Zealand? Would you add canoeing in the Bay of Plenty to your Opotiki travel itinerary? LUK in the comments!

Forgotten World Highway & Owhango Lagoon - New Zealand's Biggest Gap Year – BackpackerGuide.NZ
Day 39: Today we are road tripping down the Forgotten World Highway after checking out the Owhango Lagoon! That’s two activities today out of 365 Days: 365 Activities.
Yesterday - Day 38 -
Tomorrow – Day 40 –
About this video:
Today is day 39 of New Zealand’s Biggest Gap Year and today we are starting a road trip down the wonderful, mysterious and rugged Forgotten World Highway!
Before we hit the road though, there is one more place we want to check out before leaving the Taumarunui area: the Owhango Lagoon. Thanks to a recommendation from the Forgotten World Motel, we find a beautiful bush walk around the Owhango Lagoon which leads to the tranquil Owhango Lagoon itself.
After that, we hit the road onto the Forgotten World Highway where we are treated to countryside scenery, rolling hills and a classic New Zealand traffic jam: sheep. Things get more rough and rugged as we reach the gravel road and go through the Tangarakau Gorge. The scenery of the Forgotten World Highway is stunning, but man this road is rough!
Finally, we reach our final destination on the Forgotten World Highway this evening – a place called Tangarakau, otherwise known as Ghost Town. So we meet our Forgotten World Highway farmstay hosts and hop in a 4x4 up some mountains to check out some awesome Forgotten World Highway scenery before sunset. We have dinner with the farmstay family and get ready for more Forgotten World Highway adventures tomorrow!
What do you think of the Forgotten World Highway? Is it a New Zealand road trip you would do?

New Zealand North Island - Whanganui River Journey
Our 5-day canoeing journey down the Whanganui River began from Cherry Grove in Taumarunui and if you don’t want to commit to a 5-day adventure you can shorten it down to 3 days. The magnificent river snakes along the gorgeous New Zealand country side and into Whanganui National Park. While you float down river you’ll pass many DOC campsites where you can pitch your tent for the night or some of the sites have really nice huts you can stay in. There are plenty of side adventures you can take and perhaps the most famous on this river journey is a stone bridge that goes to nothing, literally nothing. The journey concludes as you tussle past the 50/50 rapids and on to Pipiriki.
Back to the beginning though. You’ll obviously need to rent a canoe unless you want to float the whole way to finish. Meet up at your canoe rental place with all your gear and they’ll drive you to your launch point. Once you get rolling you’ll instantly be met with amazing sites. The 5-day journey is 145 kilometers in total with plenty of campsites along the way to either build your own shelter or for a little extra you can stay in the huts. While much of the river has canyon walls on both sides there are more than enough spots you can stop for a lunch break.
On day 4 make sure to take the side trip to the famous Bridge to Nowhere. It was built to provide access to farm land in the early 20th century, but the area was so remote and unsuitable for cultivation that the venture failed and solely remains as a hiking attraction today.
And for the first time ever please welcome the Must-See-O-Meter. Pretty simple really. This tells you on a scale of 1-10 of how must see this New Zealand attraction is. Let’s see how Whanganui River Journey scores.
Wow, a 9.1! That’s some serious must see stuff.
Do yourself a favor and rent a canoe or kayak and check out the Whanganui. At the very least you can take jet boat ride to see it in one day if you’re short on time.

Whanganui River Road, New Zealand
This road is the end of the Mountains to Ocean bike trail. Only problem was that I was going in the wrong direction having started the ride at the ocean. The river road is probably one of the most stunning rides that I have done so far, that is apart from teh last 27km which are all uphill.
