Highlights of Portugal
Portugal is a beautiful country at the southwestern corner of Europe. It is historic, it is very cultural, it is diverse, it is a gem. To me it is the most interesting country of southern Europe, And its people are friendly and hospitable.
This slide video takes you to a few lovely spots in Portugal beginning with its beautiful capital city of Lisbon. Lisbon is the hilliest large city in the world and it is filled with charming neighborhoods and scenic views. Restaurants, cafes, and music are abundant in its narrow cobblestoned back alleys. Its mosaic tiled sidewalks lead to many fascinating adventures.
A great daytrip from Lisbon is to head north to the famous Shrine of Fatima. And near here is the incomparable Cathedral of Batalha. Don't forget to make a visit to Portugal's
magnificent sea coast. The village of Nazaré is scenic, very old and has beautiful beaches. It is also the home of the largest surfing wave ever surfed at 90 feet high (around 30 meters). The nearby medieval town of Obidos clinging to a hillside is not to be missed.
Finally, Portugal's second city and the pride of north Portugal - Porto (Oporto) - should be on everyone's list. Hilly like Lisbon, it is splendidly situated on the River Douro. And don't forget to take a tour of one of its famous Port Wine houses.
So sit back and sip a glass of Port Wine and listen to the wonderful music of the Portuguese group Madredeus. In this video, Madredeus are performing their haunting song Paradise (O Paraíso)
Portugal .... it is almost paradise!
LISBON: Baixa Pombalina - downtown district (2/5) Portugal
The Pombaline Lower Town (Portuguese: Baixa Pombalina) is an elegant district in Lisbon/Lisboa (Portugal), primarily constructed after the 1755 Lisbon earthquake. It takes its name from Sebastião José de Carvalho e Melo, who took the lead in ordering the rebuilding of Lisbon after the 1755 earthquake. The Marquis of Pombal imposed strict conditions on rebuilding the city, and the current grid pattern strongly differs from the organic streetplan that characterised the district before the earthquake.
The Pombaline Baixa is one of the first examples of earthquake-resistant construction. Architectural models were tested by having troops march around them to simulate an earthquake.
The Pombaline Baixa consists of the grid of streets north of the Praça do Comércio, roughly between the Cais do Sodré and the Alfama district beneath the Lisbon Castle, and extends northwards towards the Rossio and Figueira squares and the Avenida da Liberdade, a tree-lined boulevard noted for its tailoring shops and cafes.
________________________
The Praça do Comércio (English: Commerce Square) is located in Lisbon, near the Tagus river. The square is still commonly known as Terreiro do Paço because it was the location of the Paços da Ribeira until it was destroyed by the great 1755 Lisbon earthquake. After the earthquake, the square was completely remodelled as part of the rebuilding of the Pombaline Downtown.
Arco da Rua Augusta (English: Rua Augusta Arch is a stone, triumphal arch-like, historical building and visitor attraction on the Praça do Comércio (square). It was built to commemorate the city's reconstruction after the 1755 earthquake. Because of the top cornice's great height (over 100 feet/30 m), the figures above it had to be made colossal. From 9th of August 2013 it is possible to reach the viewpoint oat the top of the arch, using a lift and two flights of steep stairs.
Praça do Rossio (English: Rossio Square) is the popular name of the Praça de D. Pedro IV. It has been one of its main squares since the Middle Ages. It has been the setting of popular revolts and celebrations, bullfights and executions, and is now a preferred meeting place of Lisbon natives and tourists alike.
The Praça da Figueira (English: Square of the Fig Tree) is a large square in the centre of Lisbon. It is part of the Baixa Pombalina, the area of the city reurbanised after the 1755 Lisbon earthquake. In 1971 a bronze equestrian statue representing King John I (1357-1433) was inaugurated in the square. In 1999/2000, during the last renovation of the square, the statue was relocated from the middle to a corner of the square, in order to make it visible from the Praça do Comércio.
Praça dos Restauradores (English: Restauradores Square) is a public square in Lisbon, surrounded by 19th and early 20th century buildings. It is located at the southeast end of Avenida da Liberdade, near Rossio square. The square is dedicated to the restoration of the independence of Portugal in 1640, after 60 years of Spanish domination. The obelisk in the middle of the square, inaugurated in 1886, carries the names and dates of the battles fought during the Portuguese Restoration War, in 1640.

Tourism in Lisbon Portugal - Best Tourist Attractions
Lisbon is the capital and the largest city of Portugal, with an estimated population of 552,700 within its administrative limits in an area of 100.05 km². Its urban area extends beyond the city's administrative limits with a population of around 2.7 million people, being the 11th-most populous urban area in the European Union. About 3 million people live in the Lisbon Metropolitan Area (which represents approximately 27% of the country's population). It is continental Europe's westernmost capital city and the only one along the Atlantic coast. Lisbon lies in the western Iberian Peninsula on the Atlantic Ocean and the River Tagus. The westernmost areas of its metro area form the westernmost point of Continental Europe, which is known as Cabo da Roca, located in the Sintra Mountains.
Lisbon is recognised as a alpha-level global city by the Globalization and World Cities (GaWC) Study Group because of its importance in finance, commerce, media, entertainment, arts, international trade, education and tourism. Lisbon is the only Portuguese city besides Porto to be recognised as a global city. It is one of the major economic centres on the continent, with a growing financial sector and one of the largest container ports on Europe's Atlantic coast. Additionally, Humberto Delgado Airport served 26.7 million passengers in 2017, being the busiest airport in Portugal, the 3rd busiest in the Iberian Peninsula and the 20th busiest in Europe, and the motorway network and the high-speed rail system of Alfa Pendular links the main cities of Portugal (such as Braga, Porto and Coimbra) to Lisbon. The city is the 9th-most-visited city in Southern Europe, after Rome, Istanbul, Barcelona, Milan, Venice, Madrid, Florence and Athens, with 3,320,300 tourists in 2017. The Lisbon region contributes with a higher GDP PPP per capita than any other region in Portugal. Its GDP amounts to 96.3 billion USD and thus $32,434 per capita. The city occupies 32nd place of highest gross earnings in the world. Most of the headquarters of multinationals in the country are located in the Lisbon area. It is also the political centre of the country, as its seat of Government and residence of the Head of State.
Lisbon is one of the oldest cities in the world, and one of the oldest in Western Europe, predating other modern European capitals such as London, Paris and Rome by centuries. Julius Caesar made it a municipium called Felicitas Julia, adding to the name Olissipo. Ruled by a series of Germanic tribes from the 5th century, it was captured by the Moors in the 8th century. In 1147, the Crusaders under Afonso Henriques reconquered the city and since then it has been a major political, economic and cultural centre of Portugal. Unlike most capital cities, Lisbon's status as the capital of Portugal has never been granted or confirmed officially – by statute or in written form. Its position as the capital has formed through constitutional convention, making its position as de facto capital a part of the Constitution of Portugal.
Lisbon is located at 38°42′49.75″N 9°8′21.79″W, situated at the mouth of the Tagus River and is the westernmost capital of a mainland European country.
The westernmost part of Lisbon is occupied by the Parque Florestal de Monsanto (English: Monsanto Forest Park), a 10 km2 (4 sq mi) urban park, one of the largest in Europe, and occupying ten percent of the municipality.
The city occupies an area of 100.05 km2 (39 sq mi), and its city boundaries, unlike those of most major cities, coincide with those of the municipality. The rest of the urbanised area of the Lisbon Metropolitan Area, known generically as Greater Lisbon (Portuguese: Grande Lisboa), extends to the city of Setúbal and includes several administratively defined cities and municipalities, such as Amadora, Queluz, Agualva-Cacém, Odivelas, Loures, Sacavém, Almada, Barreiro, Seixal and Oeiras.
Lisbon has 552,700 inhabitants within the administrative center on the area of only 100.05 km². Administratively defined cities that exist in the vicinity of the capital are in fact part of the metropolitan perimeter of Lisbon. The urban area has a population of 2,666,000 inhabitants.
