Mont Saint Michel Tour & Review
My visit from of Mont St Michel. It's a UNESCO World Heritage site. The island is surrounded by mudflats and it's almost accessible by vehicles. Park on the mainland and you can ride the bus to the island or walk. Definitely a cool place to visit at least once but it's mostly a giant tourist trap. The Abbey on top isn't like a typical church you may see in Europe. No ornate stain glass, sculptures or art.

Mont St Michel, France
Sacred fortress on an island in the sea, this is one of the most magical places on the planet. Rising from the sea like a ghostly vision, this walled medieval village with a church rising at the apex is a UNESCO World Heritage site that has been an important pilgrimage site for a thousand years. Visitors still flock here for secular as well as religious reasons, to absorb this special atmosphere, especially enhanced in December when all is cold and foggy, with few visitors clogging the little lanes. Our video glimpse shows you many highlights that might tempt you to stay for a few days on the island in one of several small hotels so you can fully absorb the experience.

Places to see in ( La Rochelle - France ) Vieux Port
Places to see in ( La Rochelle - France ) Vieux Port
The Old Port is the oldest port of La Rochelle and the historic heart of this city of Charente-Maritime ( New Aquitaine ). The tower of the chain and the tower Saint Nicolas keep the entrance of this medieval port. It was thanks to this port that La Rochelle gained importance during the Hundred Years War , then with the discovery of America. In the xvii th and xviii th centuries, the Old Port of La Rochelle has attracted more than half of colonial trade to New France , which makes today a place of pilgrimage for many tourists.
The access channel to the Old Port is dredged to the coast -0.50 meter from the Richelieu Tower. It is at the Old Port of La Rochelle that the Marans Canal ends at La Rochelle. The primitive port of La Rochelle was located on the river Lafond, up to the castle Vauclair (currently Place de Verdun). This port was quickly saturated and victim of its defects (low draft, access and difficult maneuver, siltation), it no longer responded to the increase in capacity of ships and cargo (wine and salt). The port entrance was defended by the lantern tower
During the surrender of the city, following the episode of the great siege , Louis XIII ordered the demolition of all the fortifications except the seafront. In April 1689, La Rochelle , stripped of its fortifications on the ground, is vulnerable to an attack from the enemies that King Louis XIV had leagued against him. To avoid danger, the King's council, undoubtedly under the influence of Louvois, finds no better remedy than to shave La Rochelle and fill his port. Fortunately for the city, the Marshal de Lorges , to whom the king had entrusted the command of the coasts between the Loire and the Garonne, seconded by François Ferry , general engineer of the provinces between the Loire and the Pyrenees, protested against this wild project, in pledging to put La Rochelle in a state of defense in a short time and without major expenses.
The old port has twice hosted an extreme diving competition. The event brought together more than 40,000 spectators at the foot of the building in 2009. The competition consists of diving from the Saint-Nicolas tower. From 1778, under the direction of engineers Leclerc and Lescure de Bellerive, was undertaken the digging of the basin afloat, in the stirrup called Petite-Rive. Its commissioning will be done in 1808.
During the xix th century, the harbor is occupied by the fleet of fishing boats and the inner basin by small coasters. The old port becoming too small to accommodate merchant ships, it was decided in 1862 to dig the outer basin , whose location is beyond the fortifications. In the shape of an inverted L, this port has direct access to the Rompsay Canal and the rail network . A lock gate provides high tide access to the channel and a swing bridge allows communication between Gabut and the wooden town.
The lifting bridge of the Gabut or Sherzer Bridge , named after the engineer who designed it is a structure of type tilting / rolling lift . In 1935, it was decided to replace the swing bridge by a lift bridge. The lift bridge pivots like a drawbridge on a transverse axis. At the rear of this axis, two toothed arches are connected to huge counterweights and lift the fly rolling on their rack. Built for the port of Marseille in 1927 by the company Fivellile, the book is transported to La Rochelle by the sea in 1936, before being reassembled. The movable metal structure, once lifted, allows to release a passage of 16.50 m.
