The Loneliest Road in America: Pony Express, Great Basin National Park
U.S. Route 50 stretches over 3,000 miles from Ocean City, Maryland in the east to Sacramento, California in the West. Originally part of the U.S. Highway system created in 1926, it was a major transportation route until the creation of the Interstate Highway system in 1956. In 1986, Life Magazine nicknamed the Nevada portion of Route 50 “The Loneliest Road in America,” noting that it is “America minus tourist traps” with only three small towns in 400 miles of empty desert.
I wanted to experience “The Loneliest Road in America” for myself, so I drove west to east from Carson City to the small town of Baker near the Nevada-Utah border. While it is true that the route is pretty desolate, its winding mountain passes and long, open stretches of desert valleys tell the story of a time in American history dominated by Manifest Destiny, Westward Expansion and a Gold Rush. U.S. Route 50 parallels the iconic Pony Express route and you can visit the remains of a few outpost stations to this day. Just off Route 50 in the east, in between the cities of Ely and Baker, lies the beautiful Great Basin National Park – home to the mesmerizing Lehman Caves.

ABOUT US
Welcome to Grand Adventure, a YouTube channel that focuses on RV-centric outdoor activities including not only of course camping, but also mountain biking, hiking, kayaking, skiing and more, nearly always filmed in stunning 4K.
We're based in Salt Lake City, Utah, and invite you to come along as we travel all around the western U.S. My wife Patricia and I, and our dogs Zoe and Maggie are avid boondockers, so you'll seldom find us in RV parks or even dry campgrounds. Instead, we're usually camped in some of the most remote and beautiful spots that you could ever pull a travel trailer into. And unlike most other RV channels on YouTube, we're not RV dealers or full-timers -- we're weekend warriors just like you!
We'll provide tips and insight on equipping and maintaining your RV, trip planning and travel videos to make your next adventure a grand one indeed! So, subscribe to make sure that you catch every episode, and remember...life is nothing but a Grand Adventure!

The Ruby Mountains in Elko, Nevada, Ruby Lake and the Last Chance Ranch June 2004
My first journey around the Ruby Mountains in June 2004! Includes Ruby Lake National Wildlife Refuge, the Humboldt River and the Last Chance Ranch by Spring Creek and Elko, Nevada!
I chatted with a few cowboys in Clover Valley and with a few fishermen at Ruby Lake. I asked them if that was their favorite fishing hole in Elko County and they let me know that this was the best fishing place in the state!
I also saw the Pony Express Route that ran during 1860 and 1861 thru the Humboldt National Forest. I spotted a few antelope and a wild horse!

Highway 50 to Fallon, Nevada!
Fallon is surrounded by wide open spaces, internationally known wetlands, historic Pony Express trails, state parks, hiking opportunities, and places to go off-road. Play outdoors for a while then come back into town for some indoor, Nevada-style fun, great dinner, shower, bed, then get up and do it again.

About National Geographic:
National Geographic is the world's premium destination for science, exploration, and adventure. Through their world-class scientists, photographers, journalists, and filmmakers, Nat Geo gets you closer to the stories that matter and past the edge of what's possible.
One example is the annual “Round Up,” when the family joins with a group of wranglers to herd their horses to lower elevations for the winter. This exhaustive three-day ritual could be simplified with modern technology, but the practice endures as a testimony to their way of life. In this short film by Kristopher Rey-Talley, join the Kelsey family in Montana as they embark on their yearly trip with the horses through the land they cherish.

America's National Parks Are in Crisis! Learn How YOU Can Help
In our interview of the week, we talk to Chris Bornemann, Senior Manager of Government Affairs for the RV Industry Association, about the growing backlog of desperately needed repairs and maintenance affecting America's National Parks. Inadequate federal campgrounds and deteriorating or closed roads, bridges and facilities negatively impact visitor experiences and RVers in particular.
Are you an RVer looking to help our beautiful parks? Go here to easily send a message to your congress representative urging them to take action:
At a time when the RV industry is growing at record levels, RV overnight stays at National Parks have been declining from over 4.5 million overnights in the early 1980s to only 2.5 million overnight stays in 2016 due to outdated Eisenhower-era infrastructure, deferred maintenance needs and limited RV camping availability. As outdoor recreation and RV camping on our public lands continues to grow in popularity, unfortunately maintenance and infrastructure funding has not kept up.
In this interview, you'll learn what you can do about it and how you can help let Congress know you want to restore our parks.

Old Sacramento Waterfront (November 2018)
These 28 acres on the Sacramento’s historic waterfront were the site of both tragedy — fire and flood — and triumph — the raising of the streets, the founding of the Transcontinental Railroad, the terminus of the Pony Express, and the home of California’s first thriving business district, fueled by gold, agriculture and the river.
Due to past and current efforts by the State of California, private and public museums, individuals, business, the City and County of Sacramento, the Historic Old Sacramento Foundations, scores of volunteers, and many others, Old Sacramento lives on as thriving shopping and entertainment district as well as a global tourist destination.
