Porta Westfalica is a town in the district of Minden-Lübbecke, in North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany. The name Porta Westfalica is Latin and means gate to Westphalia. Coming from the north, the gorge is the entry to the region of Westphalia. The name was coined by scholars of the 19th century.

William I, or in German Wilhelm I. , of the House of Hohenzollern, was King of Prussia from 2 January 1861 and the first German Emperor from 18 January 1871 to his death, the first head of state of a united Germany. Under the leadership of William and his Minister President Otto von Bismarck, Prussia achieved the unification of Germany and the establishment of the German Empire. Despite his long support of Bismarck as Minister President, William held strong reservations about some of Bismarck's more reactionary policies, including his anti-Catholicism and tough handling of subordinates. In contrast to the domineering Bismarck, William was described as polite, gentlemanly and, while staunchly conservative, he was more open to certain classical liberal ideas than his grandson Wilhelm II.

The Hermannsdenkmal is a monument located southwest of Detmold in the district of Lippe, in Germany. It stands on the densely forested Grotenburg, sometimes also called the Teutberg or Teut, a hill in the Teutoburger Wald range. The monument is located inside the remains of a circular rampart. The monument was constructed between 1838 and 1875 to commemorate the Cherusci war chief Arminius and his victory over Rome at the Battle of the Teutoburg Forest in 9 AD. When the statue was built, its location was believed to be near the original battle site, although experts now consider it more likely that the battle took place near Kalkriese, about 100 km to the north-west.

The Externsteine [ˈɛkstɐnʃtaɪnə] is a distinctive sandstone rock formation located in the Teutoburg Forest, near the town of Horn-Bad Meinberg in the Lippe district of the German state of North Rhine-Westphalia. The formation is a tor consisting of several tall, narrow columns of rock which rise abruptly from the surrounding wooded hills. In a popular tradition going back to an idea proposed to Hermann Hamelmann in 1564, the Externsteine are identified as a sacred site of the pagan Saxons, and the location of the Irminsul idol reportedly destroyed by Charlemagne; there is however no archaeological evidence that would confirm the site's use during the relevant period. The Deutsches Eck, or German Corner, displays the reconstructed statue of German Emperor Wilhelm I.

Architect Bruno Schmitz created the statue in 1897, celebrating the German Empire's re-foundation.

The statue has led a dramatic life, erected in 1897, then severely damaged in 1945 by American troops, and finally reconstructed in 1993 after much debate.

Because of the political turmoil of the mid 20th century, pieces of the Berlin Wall are now showcased to honor German re-unification.

Koblenz, a town over two thousand years old, hosts many historical structures, the German Corner being one of its most magnificent jewels.

The famous german corner in Koblenz is a spit of land at the junction of river mosel and main river rhine. There is a huge monument of the german emperor Wilhelm the First. He was the emperor of german union in 1871.

A trip from Grand Anse to Anse aux Pins showing the pretty impressive scenery and the winding mountain roads. Plenty of places to leave the road with tragic outcome! Steep slopes, deep drains and drops off the side etc. You need a good handbrake and good steering here!
