Arugam Bay is the surfing paradise of Sri Lanka! It has a great beach, waves of all sizes and offers a decent nightlife so there's a party every night. We spend a few days in the nearby Pottuvil and got into a lot of unexpected situations!

Der Pottuvil Point ist ein Traumbeach vom Feinsten. Der könnte es locker unter die Top 10 weltweit schaffen.

Der Beach ist erschlossen, ein schönes Restaurant mit großer schattiger Terrasse wartet auf Gäste. Nur wenige Fahrminuten nördlich der Arugam Bay gelegen. Aber ein Fahrzeug benötigt man schon. Aber da gibt es ja auch noch Freds musealen VW Bus oder sein Moped. Und wenn wieder mehr Gäste kommen gibt es sicherlich bald ein Moped zu leihen. Oder aber per Fahrrad? Da müsste Fred mehr wissen, ich selbst bin da echt zu faul und habe deshalb kein Auge für exaktere Distanzen. Fred, korrekter Dr. Fred Miller, lebt ja immerhin nicht nur schon über 30 Jahre hier, er überlebte die 26 Jahre des Krieges sowie den ebenso mörderischen Tsunami am 26.12.2004 mit all seinen damaligen vielen Hotelgästen.

Schon die Fahrt von der Arugam Bay zum Pottuvil Point ist anders, wie von Sri Lanka gewohnt. Das zu durchfahrende Dorf Pottuvil mutet wie eines im mittleren Osten an. Das mag an den vielen Ziegen auf der Straße liegen, dem allgegenwärtig herumliegenden Plastikabfall oder auch an der Kleidung der muslimischen Einwohner. Manche, vermutlich ganz hübsche, verschleierte Frau steht am staubigen Straßenrand.
Die Männer tragen weiße Käppis und oft wallende Gewänder. Diese Leute leben in einer eigenen Welt, nach eigenen Regeln. Das kenne ich seit Jahren von Malaysia oder Indonesien. Uns gegenüber sind die Leute nicht ablehnend, aber schon irgendwie distanziert.

Dass hier, an der nun nach dem Krieg wieder weitgehend frei bereisbaren Ostküste, in unserem Sommer die Trockenzeit herrscht, macht Sri Lanka nun endlich zur Ganzjahresdestination. (Im Winter in den Westen, im Sommer in den Osten)

he Arugam Bay surf beach is located 314 km from Colombo and 2 ½ km south of the small town of Pottuvil in the Ampara District which belongs to the Dry Zone along the South-East coast of Sri Lanka.

Its surfing season in Arugam Bay right now, with so many surfers and party people headed over to the east coast.

But we decided to take a look at Arugam Bay during 'Off Season' and see what the east coast has to offer. And it was absolutely breathtaking!

Note:
- We could not surf. The sea was too rough and no places to rent boards.
- Accommodation choices can be limited with most hotels closed during the off season.
- Food options are also limited during this period.
- Moving around can be difficult if you don't have your own vehicle.

Other than that, WE LOVED IT!!!

The highlight was enjoying home cooked Sri Lankan food and staying in the village with a family during the duration of our stay.
