Opatija is a town and municipality in Istria, at the bottom of Kvarner Bay, in the Primorje-Gorski Kotar county of Croatia. At the 2001 census, the municipality had 12,719 inhabitants, 86.85% of them Croats and the city alone had 7,850 inhabitants. The city is 110 km from Trieste in Italy, 200 km from Zagreb (Croatian capital) and 250 km from Venice in Italy .Opatija lies on a vast territory that was inhabited by the Liburnians, an ancient people descendants of the Illyrians . During the Roman period, several cities were founded in the vicinity like Castrum Laureana, the present Lovran. Since 1947, Opatija passes under the sovereignty of the federation of Yugoslavia by the Treaty of Paris. As a result of this, the Italians, whose presence had considerably increased, leave the country. In 1991, the city entered the Republic of Croatia. Today, Opatija is an important tourist center in continuous expansion by the construction of hotels and campsites in its surroundings.

Krk (German: Vegl; Latin: Curicta; Italian: Veglia; Vegliot Dalmatian: Vikla; Ancient Greek Kyrikon, Κύρικον) is a Croatian island in the northern Adriatic Sea, located near Rijeka in the Bay of Kvarner and part of Primorje-Gorski Kotar county. Traditionally, Krk had been thought to be the largest Adriatic island, with an area of 405.78 km2 (156.67 sq mi), until geographical survey and remeasurements done in 2011 determined that the neighboring island of Cres has an equal surface area. Krk is the most populous island in the Adriatic sea, with multiple towns and villages that contain a total of 19,383 (2011) inhabitants.
