1. Virginia Creeper Trail Damascus
The Virginia Creeper Trail is a 35-mile multi-purpose rail trail, located in the Mount Rogers National Recreation Area of southwestern Virginia. The trail runs from Abingdon to Whitetop, Virginia, near the North Carolina state line – through National Forest and crossing numerous restored trestles and crossing the Appalachian Trail. The trail descends from Abingdon to Damascus, traversing rolling farm countryside and numerous parcels of private property – requiring opening and closing private gates along the route. From Damascus, hikers, cyclists and equestrians ascend to Whitetop, following Laurel Creek. Cyclists can use a shuttle service to Whitetop for the 17-mile return descent.

Tamarack: The Best of West Virginia: is a tourist destination located at Exit 45 above the Beckley service area of the West Virginia Turnpike. It features a red peaked roof and landscaped grounds that draw over 500,000 visitors annually. This large arts and crafts facility is run as an economic development project of the West Virginia Parkways Authority and sells West Virginia craft products, such as wood, glass, textiles, pottery, metal, jewelry, as well as specialty food items, fine art, and West Virginia books and recordings. There are five resident artisan studios and most weekends from Spring through Fall there are also craft demonstrations.

Roadtrip through Morgantown, West Virginia | The Local Palate

Presented by The Local Palate, the premier magazine of southern food culture. The Local Palate traveled to West Virginia to explore the unique culinary scene and cultural eats of this Southern mountain state. After filling our bellies in the capital city of Charleston we traveled on to one of the best small cities in the country - the city of Morgantown. In the college town of Morgantown we dined at a well-known watering hole, Mario's Fish Bowl, and wasted no time indulging in the fish bowl - a goblet of cold beer. After taking in this old school diner meets dive bar we stopped at Tin 202 to enjoy the stylish setting, small plates, and speciality crafted cocktails. After cocktails and small bites it was time to hit Stefano's, a classic Italian restaurant with an extensive menu of specialities from whole branzino to handmade pastas. The culinary tour of Morgantown, WV did not stop here - enjoy part two of our West Virginia journey and follow us as we continue to eat our way through this mountain state.

West Virginia During the Great Depression: Works Projects Administration

Works Progress Administration (WPA) projects in West Virginia. The Tri-County Airport at Clarksburg is graded. Streets in Morgantown are repaired. Shows remodeled buildings at Marshall College in Huntington, WPA sewing room activities, and nursery school scenes. County roads are graded and resurfaced near Helvetia. Shows mountain scenes, a fish hatchery at Ridge, and a new bridge at Charleston. Flood waters rage in 1936. Shows a new bridge at Petersburg and rebuilt flood walls and dikes. Activities on a cooperative farm in Mercer County are shown. Orphans play and swim at Camp Fairchance.

Driving Scenic Route 11 in Shenandoah Valley Virginia

Driving I-81 at exit 257, and followed Rt. 11 north through New Market, Mt. Jackson, and stopped filming in Woodstock (all VA). Large sections of Rt. 11 are considered a scenic byway but think Rt. 40. Before the interstate, this was the highway, so there's some sprawl in little towns and sections of it run right through Staunton, Harrisonburg and Roanoke, making it very congested decidedly non-scenic. This part above (check out the google map of the area) runs right along this big mountain ridge so it's lovely.
