Carrara is a city and comune in the Province of Massa and Carrara (Tuscany, Italy), notable for the white or blue-grey marble quarried there. It is on the Carrione River, some 100 kilometres (62 mi) west-northwest of Florence.
Economy and culture
==============
Carrara marble has been used since the time of Ancient Rome; the Pantheon and Trajan's Column in Rome are constructed of it. Many sculptures of the Renaissance were carved from Carrara marble.
In addition to the marble quarries, the city has academies of sculpture and fine arts and a museum of statuaries and antiquities, and a yearly marble technology fair. The local marble is exported around the world, and marble from elsewhere is also fashioned and sculpted commercially here.
Main sights
================
Cathedral (Duomo, 12th century).
Ducal Palace (also Palazzo Cybo Malaspina, 16th century), now the seat of the Fine Arts Academy. Built over pre-existing Lombard fortification, it dates to the reign of Guglielmo Malaspina, becoming in 1448 the permanent seat of the dynasty. It includes two distinct edifices: the Castello Malaspiniano, dating to the 13th century, and the Renaissance palace, begun by Alberico I in the late 16th century. Under the medieval loggia are exposed several ancient Roman findings.
Baroque church and convent of San Francesco, built in 1623–64 by order of Carlo I Cybo-Malaspina.
Palazzo Cybo-Malaspina
Sanctuary of the Madonna delle Grazie alla Lugnola, consecrated in 1676 and designed by Alessandro Bergamini.

Emma Villas - Villa Cervarola (Tuscany - Villafranca in Lunigiana - Massa/Carrara)
ENG: Villa Cervarola is located in the heart of Lunigiana, set within an olive grove and surrounded by the Apuan Alps that frame it as if it were an impressionist painting. The villa was originally composed of three farmhouses, which were skilfully merged and restructured, respecting the characteristics of the time by using local materials such as stone, wood and terracotta. The property includes a portico and a swimming pool with ample relaxation areas which look out over a beautiful view. Its position, on a hill just outside the town of Villafranca in Lunigiana, ensures maximum privacy for a relaxing holiday but, at the same time, allows you to visit many towns such as Carrara, Cinque Terre, Pontremoli, Lucca, Pisa, Florence, all just a short drive away.

ITA: Villa Cervarola si trova nel cuore della Lunigiana, immersa all'interno di un uliveto e circondata dalle Alpi Apuane che la completano come fa la cornice con un quadro impressionista. - See more at:
FROM SWEDEN TO ITALY - SEPTEMBER 2007
In September 2007 me and my sister went to Italy by car. We didn't use a GPS, we only used maps.
From Västerås in Sweden to Nápoli in Italy and back: 5800 kilometres.
Here's some photos from our trip from Sweden - Germany - Austria - Italy.
AUSTRIA
September 5th it was snowing and we were wearing shorts :)
ITALY
GARDONE RIVIERA, LAGO DI GARDA
We stayed at a hotel that was owned by nuns.
Lago di Garda is the largest lake in Italy. It is located in Northern Italy.
PARMA is a city in the Italian region of Emilia-Romagna.
I love cannoli! :) Leave the car (not gun) and take the cannoli :)
ROMA is the capital city of Italy, region of Lazio.
One of the hottest day on our trip.
LA SERRA, BAIA DOMIZIA
We stayed here for a week, it's a very nice place and very close to the sea.
Baia Domizia is at the boarder of the regions Lazio and Campania.
180 km south of Roma and 60 km north of Nápoli.
POMPEI is a ruined and partially buried Roman town-city near modern Naples in the Italian region of Campania. The city was destroyed, and completely buried, during a long catastrophic eruption of the volcano Mount VESUVIO spanning two days in AD 79.
The volcano collapsed higher roof-lines and buried Pompeii under 60 feet of ash and pumice, and it was lost for nearly 1700 years before its accidental rediscovery in 1748.
Pompei is one of the coolest and most interesting places I've ever been to!
GIARDINO DEI TAROCCHI - THE TAROT GARDEN
Niki de Saint Phalle (b.1930d.2002) was a French sculptor, painter, and film maker.
In 1979, she acquired some land in Garavicchio, Tuscany, about 100 km north-west of Rome along the coast. The garden, called Giardino dei Tarocchi in Italian, contains sculptures of the symbols found on Tarot cards. The garden took many years, and a considerable sum of money, to complete. It opened in 1998, after more than 20 years of work.
A very nice park with beautiful sculptures!
SIENA is a city in Tuscany.
Siena's cathedral, the Duomo, begun in the twelfth century, is one of the great examples of Italian romanesque architecture. Its main façade was completed in 1380.
GROSSETO is a town and comune in the central Italian region of Tuscany.
This house is...hm...colorful...? :)
ELBA is an island in Tuscany, Italy, 20 kilometres from the coastal town of Piombino. It is the largest island of the Tuscan Archipelago, and the third largest island in Italy after Sicily and Sardinia.
LUCCA is a city in Tuscany, northern central Italy.
CARRARA is a city in the province of Massa-Carrara (Tuscany, Italy), famous for the white or blue-gray marble quarried there. Carrara marble has been used since the time of Ancient Rome; the Pantheon and Trajan's Column in Rome are constructed of it. Many sculptures of the Renaissance, such as Michelangelo's David, were carved from Carrara marble. For Michelangelo at least, Carrara marble was valued above all other stone, except perhaps that of his own quarry in Pietrasanta. The Marble Arch in London and the Duomo di Siena are also made from this stone.
It was very scary to drive in that tunnel, it was so dark and alot of dust, that you almost couldn't see anything. My darkblue car was white after the dust from the Carrara marble.
BOLZANO is a city in the Trentino-Alto Adige/Südtirol region of Italy.
The South Tyrol Museum of Archaeology in Bolzano is where the ice-mummy Ötzi is kept.
He looks nice after 5000 years :)
CELLE is a town and capital of the district of Celle, in Lower Saxony, Germany.
The most impressive building is the ducal palace, Schloss Celle, which was built in 1530 at the site of the former castle. The buildings in Celles old town centre date back to the 16th century, among them numerous (and some 480 restored) half-timber houses.
A very nice town with beautiful houses. I liked the Steakhouse :)
SWEDEN
In Göteborg it was raining, welcome back home to Sweden :)
And back home in Västerås the car was full... with memories from our trip.

Places to see in ( Forte Dei Marmi - Italy )
Places to see in ( Forte Dei Marmi - Italy )
Forte dei Marmi is a seaside town in Tuscany, Italy, known for its beaches. The Pontile is a long pier offering views of the Tyrrhenian Sea, plus the city, which features the Apuan Alps in the background. Sculptures dot the town center, including the marble Monumento ai Caduti war memorial. Nearby, the 18th-century Lorenese Fort houses the Museum of Satire and Caricature, with its collection of political cartoons.
Amust-visit destination for those who love the sea and high fashion, Forte dei Marmi is one of the chicest and most up-to-date towns in the Versilia. The small town attracts tourists from all over Europe every year thanks to its beautiful beach, elegant villas immersed in pine groves and the impressive view of the Apuan Alps, which serve as a majestic background behind the town.
The symbol of cosmopolitan Forte dei Marmi – in addition to the Fortino that gives the town its name (today the home of the Museum of Satire and Caricatures) – is the famous pier (built in 1876), historically used for loading marble extracted from the quarries onto the boats and which has been imitated by other seafront cities in Versilia over the last few decades (Forte di Marmi certainly knows how to launch trends).
Founded in the Roman era, Forte dei Marmi began to expand consistently in the 16th century due to the opening of the quarries in the mountains behind the town. Around the same time, the Fortress grew through renovation efforts, which continued for the rest of the century. The Fortress was finished in 1788 and by the time the 1800s came about, the Versilia town had started to become the attractive tourist destination that we know today.
The ideal destination for international luxury tourism, be it for the beaches and the elegant villas in the town center, Forte dei Marmi is also famous for its festivals (in honour of Saint Hermes and Saint Francis) and for its markets (the antiques market and those in Piazza Marconi and Vittoria Apuana). The backcountry is also worth a visit, full of ancient traditions and hidden corners in the woodlands of the Apuan Alps, inviting you to explore evocative and surprising paths.
A sunny Sunday afternoon in Forte dei Marmi is a perfect moment for people who love walking around high-fashion made in Italy boutiques. Forte dei Marmi is an enchanting village of Versilia, along the Mediterranean Sea and one of the most known and trendy seaside resort in Tuscany.
It has been known since 1519 when Michelangelo Buonarroti was working in these parts. Thanks to him, the road Via del Marmo was lay-out to carry the blocks of precious white marble from Carrara quarries to the sea. Forte dei Marmi takes its name from the fort built in the city center in 1700, as well as from the Carrara marble extracted a few miles from the town and famous all over the world for its incredible quality.
( Forte Dei Marmi - Italy ) is well know as a tourist destination because of the variety of places you can enjoy while you are visiting Forte Dei Marmi . Through a series of videos we will try to show you recommended places to visit in Forte Dei Marmi - Italy
