The term Train des Pignes primarily signifies the four railways with metre gauge that once existed in the departments of Alpes-Maritimes , Var , Alpes-de-Haute-Provence and Bouches-du-Rhône in the Provence-Alpes-Côte-d'Azur région in southern France: Nice - Meyrargues Nice - Digne-les-Bains St.Raphaël - Toulon Cogolin - St.Tropez Only the one between Nice and Digne is still in operation. Therefore, today most people when they use the term, unaware of the history, refer to the Nice-Dignes line only. Pignes is the southern French dialect word for pine cones. The St. Raphaël - Toulon and Cogolin - St. Tropez lines were also sometimes called Le Macaron.

The Lake of Sainte-Croix is a man-made lake that was formed by the construction, between 1971 and 1974 of a reinforced-concrete arch dam by the name of Dam of Sainte-Croix. The reservoir holds a maximum of 761 million cubic metres of water. The dam, which generates 142 million kWh of electricity per year, is 94 metres high, 7.5 metres thick at its base and 3 metres thick at its crest. The village that can be seen adjacent to the lake, however, is not the eponymous village of Sainte-Croix-de-Verdon but Les Salles-sur-Verdon. The original village is now completely underwater. The other villages around the lake are: Sainte-Croix-du-Verdon Bauduen Les Salles-sur-Verdon

Le Train des Pignes 2017

September brings our annual holiday to France and a pleasant Sunday excursion to visit and film the Train des Pignes up in the hills above Nice. In contrast to previous years when we have filmed in hot sunshine, the day we filmed in 2017, 10th. September, was cold and largely overcast. The train runs on the metre gauge Chemin de Fer de Provence line featuring 1923 built Mallet no.E211 which was owned by Portugeuse Railways. The train operates during the summer months between Puget - Theniers and Annot and the video sees the train at various locations on both the outward and return journeys. Not substantially different to my previous videos of the Train des Pignes due to the same loco having been used for several years and new locations are hard to come by but it is a record of the day and this year we managed to include some shots of the loco movements at Annot.
Thanks to the G.E.C.P. association who operate the steam trains over the line.
