Apulia is a region of Italy in Southern Italy bordering the Adriatic Sea to the east, the Ionian Sea to the southeast, and the Strait of Otranto and Gulf of Taranto to the south. Its southernmost portion, known as the Salento peninsula, forms a tacco or heel on the boot of Italy. The region comprises 19,345 square kilometers , and its population is about four million. It is bordered by the other Italian regions of Molise to the north, Campania to the west, and Basilicata to the southwest.     Gargano is a historical and geographical sub-region in the province of Foggia, Apulia, southeast Italy, consisting of a wide isolated mountain massif made of highland and several peaks and forming the backbone of the Gargano Promontory projecting into the Adriatic Sea, the spur on the Italian boot. The high point is Monte Calvo at 1,065 m . Most of the upland area, about 1,200 km2 , is part of the Gargano National Park, founded in 1991. It is within the Italian Province of Foggia.
