Italians are big fans of the seaside, escaping to local beaches for the day or often returning to the same resort town year after year for an extended holiday.
That said, with a few exceptions, Italy does not have a surfeit of glorious beaches. Nor is it particularly well served by the UK’s traditional big sun and sea tour operators, at least when compared with Spain, Greece or Turkey. But you can still have a great time on the Italian coast.
See here for our pick of the top 10 beach holidays in Italy
Where it can hold its own is Sardinia, which has some of the best beaches in Europe, never mind Italy. This makes it more than usually popular with Italians (and Germans and Scandinavians), so book Sardinian beach holidays, as well as any flights or ferries, well in advance.

Even for mainland Italians, Sardinia is a world apart, so it is worth seeking guidance from a specialist such as Sardatur (see “Tour operators”). Choose between small, boutique and luxury hotels on tiny bays, with sickles of white sand, or chic, family- and couple-friendly resorts with activities, such Forte Village, Chia Laguna, Le Dune, Romazzino and the Flamingo.
Hill-town Taormina is the island’s best-known resort. It is attractive, but expensive, and has relatively poor beaches on the coast immediately below the town. Cefalù is a pleasing resort town with a fine historic core. The south coast has many empty beaches, notably at Eraclea Minoa (plus Camerina, Donnalucata, and Punta Secca), but is a rather flat, lifeless shore. Key emerging destinations are the smaller islands, particularly Pantelleria and the Egadi and Aeolian archipelagos.
After Sardinia, many Italians plump for the Adriatic coast, lined for most of its length south of Ravenna with good sand, safe seas and unpretentious small-town resorts. If you want a gentle, Italian family-style seaside holiday, this is the place. Just avoid Rimini, a big and sometimes brash resort. Beaches near Monte Conero, near Ancona, are standouts.
Puglia, too, the “heel” of Italy’s “boot”, has a decent but often rocky coastline. While the Gargano peninsula is busy, the almost Greek-looking Salentino peninsula is quieter, with especially good beaches around Gallipoli and south of Otranto.

Places to see in ( Ragusa - Italy )
Places to see in ( Ragusa - Italy )
Ragusa is one of the most picturesque towns in Sicily. The view from the upper town over Ragusa Ibla on its own separate hilltop is quite breathtaking. One of the UNESCO-listed Baroque towns of south-eastern Sicily, Ragusa is also one of the principal filming locations for the Sicilian detective drama Il Commissario Montalbano (Inspector Montalbano), a series which has done wonders for publicising the beauty of this area. With a new airport at Comiso, ten miles away, due to open, this is a tourist destination which is definitely up and coming.
Ragusa is in the Monti Iblei, a large area of high ground, divided up by dry stone walls and incised with ravines. The town was originally built on a small steep-sided hill with deep valleys on three sides separating it from the high plateau. After the earthquake of 1693, which destroyed many of south-eastern Sicily's buildings, it was decided to rebuild Ragusa on higher, more level ground nearby. This new planned town was built, with straight streets and a rational layout, but local aristocrats didn't want to move, and instead built themselves new palazzi on the ruins of the old town. So nowadays Ragusa has two parts: Ibla (or Ragusa Ibla), the older nucleus on its hilltop, and Ragusa Superiore, the more modern upper town which spreads from the post-earthquake streets into more recent developments. Like all Sicilian towns, Ragusa has its share of ugly modern sprawl, but this is well away from the historic centre, which is remarkably unspoilt.
Ragusa Ibla is the magnet for tourists, though the upper town is still worth a visit. The bus and railway stations, the town's archaeological museum and its everyday shops and businesses are in Ragusa Superiore as well as most of the hotels. Ibla is the more charming base for a holiday, though, with picturesque lanes, cafes, restaurants and gastronomic shops aimed at tourists. Its main artery is the perfect venue for the evening passeggiata.
The best activity in Ragusa is wandering; meandering along the character-filled lanes of Ragusa Ibla or clambering up the steps towards the upper town and enjoying the great, classic view over Ibla. This is an inviting town for even more leisurely pursuits - a long drink at a cafe table on the pretty sloping piazza in front of the Duomo, a wine-flavoured gelato, a splendid meal at one of the town's small restaurants or a stroll in the park.
Like neighbouring towns, Ragusa was rebuilt after the great earthquake in the Baroque style, and its palazzi and churches are elegant and covered with a profusion of florid detail. The grandest building in Ibla is the cathedral, the Duomo di San Giorgio, begun in 1738 and designed by the architect Rosario Gagliardi. Up a flight of steps and segregated from the streets by ornate railings, this is the heart of the old town and contains some of its best, and most prized artworks. These include a statue of St. George which is carried around town in devout processions. Alongside the church is the small Museo del Duomo (open at weekends), a museum containing stone statues and reliefs from the original pre-earthquake San Giorgio and other churches, architectural drawings by Gagliardo, some extravagant reliquaries and gloomy religious paintings. One of the highlights is a nice little stone carving, from the 15th century, portraying a honey-maker (mielaio) with honeycomb and jug.
Ibla's lanes contain many charms, from elaborately-sculpted balconies to views over the narrow valleys below town. If you have time, it's a good place to explore, with some intriguing corners. A little tourist train (trenino) departs from Piazza Duomo and is an entertaining way of touring the principal streets.
As well as exploring Ibla, most visitors will want to take a look at Ragusa Superiore. The two towns meet at a saddle of land marked by the small Piazza della Repubblica. One of the town's tourist offices is alongside, and also the attractive Chiesa delle Anime del Purgatorio. The upper town can be reached by an energetic climb or by the little local bus from the Giardino Ibleo or Piazza della Repubblica.

South Sicily: travel documentary
This time we are in Sicily, more precisely in Siracusa, to explore the southern part of the island. A trip made on the occasion of the 40 years of marriage of our parents.
We start from Siracusa, more precisely from the island of Ortigia from which we base ourselves to explore the triptych of the baroque: Noto, Modica and Ragusa. The whole area was devastated by a terrible earthquake in the eighteenth century and the three cities were rebuilt in the baroque style of the time.
Before leaving for Agrigento, let's go to Punta Secca to look for the house of commissioner Montalbano and to make the first bath in 2018. It's April 21st
The Valley of the Temples of Agrigento is something unique but it is Agrigento that catches our attention. At first sight it seems a city almost ghost, but slowly discover the charm of its historic center with the palaces in Sicilian baroque, made not of marble but of stones that seem to melt in the sun and wind.
From Agrigento we make an episode in Favara, 10 kilometers away to explore the Farm Cultural Park, an artistic experiment that has succeeded in enhancing a country that in recent years has been affected by depopulation and decadence.
The journey continues with an episode at the Scala dei Turchi and at the birth house of Luigi Pirandello, the Nobel Prize for Literature 1934.
We end our trip to Sicily on Mount Etna, the heart (geologically) button of the island, from which we conclude our visit trying to understand why this island is defined as the most beautiful region of Italy

Places to see in ( Milazzo - Italy ) Milazzo beach
Places to see in ( Milazzo - Italy ) Milazzo beach
Milazzo has a wonderful coastline which is characterised by fine and golden sandy bays. Milazzo has many different cultural and artistic heritage sites and people are forever attracted to its seaside. For this reason the Italian Navy honour the important marine traditions with fisherman and sailors celebrating their soldiers, and the famous Austrian battleship Santo Stefano in the waters of Premuda in the Adriatic Sea. Its long beaches have fine and golden sandy bays. A special tourism attraction is the Piscina di Venere, a small natural pool formed between pointed and impressive rocks where you can watch the waves crash against them in a unique and amazing show.
Some might make the mistake of coming to Milazzo to get on the hydrofoil and leave for the Aeolian without having first taken a dip in the waters of this ancient town. Capo Milazzo divides the coast into two, in which the western part is the most suitable for swimming.
It is a long stretch of gravel, large and clean, washed by a blue sea that reaches discrete depths within walking distance from the shore. The beach receives numerous tourists, hosted by good and modern accommodations, with a vivid view of the scenery of Milazzo.
In the background, the large size of the Aeolian characterizes the whole landscape. The sights of the seabed, which open from Milazzo, make it one of the best places for diving and exploration of Tyrrhenian Sicily. From the sandy shores, abundant marine vegetation alternates large rocky areas that immediately reach deep depths.
From the western side to the eastern side, reaching up to Punta del Tone, the underwater spectacular is shown in all its glory, with fish of medium and large sizes that move fast among the rocks, crustaceans, octopus, seahorses and rock fish often dwell in the area as well.
Further offshore, about half a kilometer from the coast other dive sites of equal beauty can be found: the Secca di Ponente and Levante Secca are perfect destinations for those who love to enjoy marine life, with a myriad of fish species that inhabit the depths.
