10 Things You May Not Know About “The Great Wall of China” | Ten-Thousand Mile Long Wall Of China
#TheGreatWallofChina is a series of fortifications built along an east-to-west line across the historical northern borders of China to protect the Chinese states and empires against the raids and invasions of the various nomadic groups of the Eurasian Steppe with an eye to expansion.

Several walls were being built as early as the 7th century BC; these, later joined together and made bigger and stronger, are collectively referred to as the Great Wall.
Apart from defense, other purposes of #TheGreatWall have included border controls, allowing the imposition of duties on goods transported along #TheSilkRoad, regulation or encouragement of trade and the control of immigration and emigration.
Furthermore, the defensive characteristics of the Great Wall were enhanced by the construction of watch towers, troop barracks, garrison stations, signaling capabilities through the means of smoke or fire, and the fact that the path of the Great Wall also served as a transportation corridor.
Here are 10 Things You May Not Know About “The Great Wall of #China”:
The Great Wall is generally recognized as one of the most impressive architectural feats in history. An archaeological survey found that the entire wall with all of its branches measures out to be 21,196 km (13,171 mi).
Collectively, they stretch from Dandong in the east to Lop Lake in the west, from present-day Sino-Russian border in the north to Qinghai in the south; along an arc that roughly delineates the edge of Mongolian steppe.
The Great Wall of China is made of stone, brick, tamped earth, wood, and other materials.
Before the use of bricks, the Great Wall was mainly built from rammed earth, stones, and wood. During the Ming, however, bricks were heavily used in many areas of the wall, as were materials such as tiles, lime, and stone.
Many western sections of the wall are constructed from mud, rather than brick and stone, and thus are more susceptible to erosion. In 2014 a portion of the wall near the border of Liaoning and Hebei province was repaired with concrete.
As we know, The Great Wall is actually a series of several walls built at different times by different emperors. The categories below are non-exhaustive, and all refer to wall systems rather than single monolithic walls.
• First Great wall - built by #TheQinDynasty 221-207 BC
• Second Great Wall - built by #TheHanDynasty 205-127 BC
• Third Great Wall - built by #TheJinDynasty 1200 AD
• Fourth Great Wall - built by #TheMingDynasty 1367-1644
The Great Wall has been rebuilt, maintained, and enhanced over various dynasties; the majority of the existing wall is from the Ming Dynasty (1368–1644).
#TheFrontierWalls built by different dynasties have multiple courses. Especially famous is the wall built in 220–206 BC by Qin Shi Huang, the first Emperor of China. Little of that wall remains.
The collection of fortifications known as the Great Wall of China has historically had a number of different names in both Chinese and English.
The longer Chinese name #TenThousandMileLongWall (萬里長城, Wanli Changcheng) came from Sima Qian's description of it in the Records, though he did not name the walls as such.
By the 19th century, The Great Wall of China had become standard in English, French, and German, although other European languages continued to refer to it as the Chinese wall.
It took millennia to build, but today the Great Wall of China stands out as one of the world's most famous landmarks and an iconic symbol of China. It is listed as one of the New7wonders Of The World
The claim that the Great Wall is visible from the moon has been debunked many times, but is still ingrained in popular culture.
The apparent width of the Great Wall from the Moon is the same as that of a human hair viewed from 3 km (2 mi) away. Unsurprisingly, no lunar astronaut has ever claimed to have seen the Great Wall from the Moon.
