3. Monteverde Cloud Forest Biological Reserve Monteverde Cloud Forest Reserve
The Monteverde Cloud Forest Reserve is a Costa Rican reserve located along the Cordillera de Tilarán within the Puntarenas and Alajuela provinces. Named after the nearby town of Monteverde and founded in 1972, the Reserve consists of over 10,500 hectares of cloud forest, the reserve is visited by roughly 70,000 visitors a year. The Reserve consists of 6 ecological zones, 90% of which are virgin forest. An extremely high biodiversity, consisting of over 2,500 plant species , 100 species of mammals, 400 bird species, 120 reptilian and amphibian species, and thousands of insects, has drawn both scientists and tourists alike.

This nation has bewilderingly diverse culture, climates, flora, fauna, and landscapes. From rain forests, to dry tropical and temperate forests, to volcanoes, to Caribbean and Pacific beaches, to high mountains, and marshy lowlands.
Costa Rica has a rich and vibrant history that first marked the history books on September 18th 1502. This date was when the land mass was first discovered by Christopher Columbus. Costa Rica is one of the world's most popular destinations for eco-tourists because of its biodiversity. The Arenal Volcano National Park is found in the northern region of Alajuela - next to the small town of La Fortuna. Most tourists visit the Arenal area before heading to the beaches as part of their Costa Rican Adventure, and with good reason!
Costa Rica is home to six active volcanoes, the most famous of all being the majestic Arenal Volcano. Rising up to 5,355 ft (1,633m) it is thought to be a relatively young volcano at around 7,000 years old.
It is one of the ten most active volcanoes in the world, making for an exciting visit. The last major eruption was back in 1968,- but has recently entered a resting phase as of December 2010. None the less - it remains a stunning iconic image of Costa Rica.
The geothermal activity in the area means the surrounding vegetation is lush and has plenty of flora and fauna. Of the 850 bird species found in Costa Rica, many of them can be spotted in the Arenal Region.
The underground thermal hot springs are a big attraction, and one of the main reasons you will find plenty of excellent resorts and boutique hotels in the area.
The Arenal Kioro Hotel comes highly recommended. It has some of the best views of the Volcano as it's located at the base! The on-site hot springs are a perfect spot to enjoy the views at night.
