Costa Rica is a small country in Central America bordered by Nicaragua to the north, Panama to the south, the Pacific Ocean to the west, and the Caribbean Sea to the east. Though its capital, San Jose, is home to cultural institutions like the Pre-Columbian Gold Museum, Costa Rica is known for its beaches, volcanoes, and biodiversity. Roughly a quarter of its area is made up of protected jungle, teeming with wildlife including spider monkeys and quetzal birds.
Since the late 1980s Costa Rica became a popular nature travel destination, and its main competitive advantage is its well-established system of national parks and protected areas, covering around 23.4% of the country's land area, the largest in the world as a percentage of the country's territory, and home to a rich variety of flora and fauna. By the early 1990s, Costa Rica became known as the poster child of ecotourism. According to the Costa Rican Tourism Board. This nation has bewilderingly diverse culture, climates, flora, fauna, and landscapes. From rain forests, to dry tropical and temperate forests, to volcanoes, to Caribbean and Pacific beaches, to high mountains, and marshy lowlands.
Costa Rica has a rich and vibrant history that first marked the history books on September 18th 1502. This date was when the land mass was first discovered by Christopher Columbus. Costa Rica is one of the world's most popular destinations for eco-tourists because of its biodiversity. Costa Rica possesses the greatest density of species in the world, and around 25% of its national territory is protected by a system of conservation areas and national parks.
Because Costa Rica is located between eight and 12 degrees north of the Equator, the climate is Tropical year round. However, the country has many microclimates depending on elevation, rainfall, topography, and by the geography of each particular region.

The Arenal Volcano National Park is found in the northern region of Alajuela - next to the small town of La Fortuna. Most tourists visit the Arenal area before heading to the beaches as part of their Costa Rican Adventure, and with good reason!
Costa Rica is home to six active volcanoes, the most famous of all being the majestic Arenal Volcano. Rising up to 5,355 ft (1,633m) it is thought to be a relatively young volcano at around 7,000 years old.
It is one of the ten most active volcanoes in the world, making for an exciting visit. The last major eruption was back in 1968,- but has recently entered a resting phase as of December 2010. None the less - it remains a stunning iconic image of Costa Rica.
The geothermal activity in the area means the surrounding vegetation is lush and has plenty of flora and fauna. Of the 850 bird species found in Costa Rica, many of them can be spotted in the Arenal Region.
The underground thermal hot springs are a big attraction, and one of the main reasons you will find plenty of excellent resorts and boutique hotels in the area.
The Arenal Kioro Hotel comes highly recommended. It has some of the best views of the Volcano as it's located at the base! The on-site hot springs are a perfect spot to enjoy the views at night.
The best 5 Star option is The Springs Resort. It has an array of spacious suites, and multiple restaurants to dine at. Undoubtedly the highlight of The Springs Resort is the hot springs themselves, - many of which are hidden within the forest. These secluded spots are perfect to soak up the thermal waters at all times of the day.
If you are looking for a smaller, intimate boutique hotel you won't find any better than Arenal Nayara. Voted frequently one of the Top 10 hotels in the world, this small boutique hotel is the leader when it comes to service and comfort. The hotel has panoramic views of the Volcano from every private balcony in each colorful suite. The restaurants on site are renowned in the area offering up delicious evening meals. The Wine Bar is a true indulgence, offering some of the best wines from all over the Americas.
La Fortuna is Costa Rica's adventure Capital. This single area includes every adventure aspect Costa Rica has to offer: from the white water rafting on the Toro and Balsa Rivers to visiting La Fortuna Waterfall on horseback. The waterfall canyoneering adventure offers exciting thrills, and the famous zip-line canopy tour will make sure you have some amazing views of the local area!
There are plenty of tours and activities to choose from to keep everyone entertained.
