Pezi Dam

Raches is a village and a former municipality on the island of Ikaria, North Aegean, Greece. Since the 2011 local government reform it is part of the municipality Ikaria, of which it is a municipal unit. With a population of 2,163 inhabitants and a land area of 101.768 km2, it is the largest in area, smallest in population, and therefore the least densely populated of the three municipal units on Icaria. The other two municipal units are Agios Kirykos and Evdilos.

Irene Gevezes has accomodations in the small Ikarian village of Kampos.

Located on the southern side of the island, and roughly at its mid-point, Irene's Rooms are perfectly suited for visitor explorations of Ikaria.

THINGS TO SEE AND DO

Not that Kampos itself doesn't have things to offer the visitor. Kampos beach is less than a kilometre from the rooms, and the village has its share of archeological treasures to delight and amaze.

The ancient Theatre of Oinoie still stands near the ocean, while the Byzantine church of Aiya Irini (Saint Irene), is close by. In the grounds of the church is a small but fascinating archeological museum housing artifacts collected from the surrounding area and other parts of the island.

Two traditional festivals take place in Kampos itself during the year. The first is in May, and the last in September. If your stay on the island coincides with one of these festivals, Irene's Rooms are perfect located to enjoy the festivities.

Even if your stay does not coincide with these two festivals, it is almost sure to coincide with one of the many other festivals and events that take place on Ikaria every year.

When you have finished examining the archeology in the area, you will of course, want to spend some time at the beach.

Thankfully, Kampos beach is within easy walking distance of Irene's Rooms and you will find it delightfully safe, clean and uncrowded. Over the summer, a small concession stand is located on the beach serving coffee, snacks, and other refreshments.

DINING OUT

Irene's Rooms are just metres from Paskalia's Kafenio (cafe). Now managed by Zac, the cafe has been run by the same family for over 50 years.

Zac speaks fluent English and can communicate with visitors and guests in several other European languages. The cafe serves delicious home cooked meals made from fresh ingredients picked on a daily basis from the family's own gardens located near by in Kampos valley, one of the most fertile regions on the island.

Of course, there are several other cafes in Kampos which also serve delicious, affordable meals late in to the night.
