Ukraine (Ukrainian: Україна) is a country in Eastern Europe. It lies at the northwest end of the Black Sea, with Russia to the east, Belarus to the north, Poland to the northwest, Slovakia and Hungary to the west, and Romania to the south west and south, with Moldova in between.

Travel Warning WARNING ( 2 ): Be aware that is illegal to take any items of historical importance out of the country. This includes badges, medals, icons, historical paintings, etc. This law is strictly enforced at all exit points of the country and one risks heavy fines and/or imprisonment.
To shop you will most certainly need local currency (hryvnia). British pound, Euro, US dollar and other currency exchange points are very common in cities, and the exchange rate is usually very fair (except in Kiev, where the exchange rate is higher compared to other cities). However, sometimes and in some banks there are problems with cash deposits (or that is the official version), so do not exchange too many dollars unless you're traveling to the more provincial areas. When doing person-to-person payments you might be able to pay in Euros or US dollars, as those are widely recognized, and you might in fact get better rates than in official exchange points. However, be careful, because it's not legal to make payments with foreign currency.
If you want to buy any kind of artwork in Kiev, the place to visit is Andriivskij Uzviz (Андріївський узвіз in Ukrainian, Андреевский спуск in Russian).
If you don't want to have trouble exchanging money keep one of these currencies: EUR, RUB, USD. In South and East Ukraine, it is almost impossible to exchange other currency. In Western Ukraine (especially in Lviv) PLN (polish zloty) can also be exchanged without any problems.

Ukrainian cuisine is quite tasty, but just as other cuisines in the region uses a lot of fat ingredients, especially in the festive dishes. Traditional local food includes salo (salted lard) and soups like borshch (борщ in Ukrainian) made of red beets or solianka (солянка in Ukrainian) which is a delicious meat soup. The first, salo, is perhaps something you might not make yourself try - however is a delicious side dish, as for the soups being a must-have dish.
If you are outside a big city or in doubt about food, exercise caution and common sense about where you buy food. Try to buy groceries only in supermarkets or large grocery stores, always check the expiration date, and never buy meat or dairy products on the street (you can buy them at the market but not near the market).
In most towns in Ukraine there are some very good restaurants. Read the menu boards posted by the entrance of every establishment to help you to choose.
You may also find nice places to eat not by signs, but just by the smoke of traditional wood fires. These are often places where they serve traditional Ukrainian food, including very tasty shashlyky (шашлики in Ukrainian). Restaurateurs are very friendly, and, more often than not, you will be one of their first foreign visitors. Next to the borshch, you might also ask for varenyky (вареники in Ukrainian, dumplings filled with meat, vegetables or fruits) or deruny (деруни, potato pancakes). You have to try varenyky with potatoes and cottage cheese in a sautéed onion and sourcream sauce, a fantastic dish. These are just starters, but ones that might fill you up quickly.

Hiking polonina Svidovec with Mavic | Ukraine | Поход в Карпаты на массив Свидовец, аэросъемка
3 day long hike over polonina Svidovec in Ukrainian Carpathian with DJI Mavic Pro. From Yasinia to Ust Corna and Kolochava.
We started our hiking trip in the village Yasina, which is very easy to reach by train.
At the first day our elevation difference was about 900 meters and we built our tent behind Dragobrat near the water spring.
Polonina Svidovec stretches for 50km between cities of Rakhiv and Ust Corna. We hiked almost the whole length of polonina, ascending many peaks like Bliznitsa, Stohy, Mencul, Tempa...
During one day we were usually walking for about 11-15 k. We were very happy to finish our hike in the village Ust'-Čorna, however our happiness didn't last long as we found out there was no public transport and we had to go to Kolocava by foot. We were lucky that one local man helped us and brought us through the villages Ruska Moikra and Nimetska Mokra by car. From there on we had to continue by foot. Roads in that part are really bad and we totally understand why there is no public transportation there.In total we walked for about 60km. Despite these logistic difficulties, Karpaty are wonderful during the summer and we will definitely go there again and again.
Начали наш поход в с. Ясиня, куда легко добраться поездом. Идти в поход в Карпаты с дроном DJI Mavic pro было одно удовольствие по сравнению с Phantom, по сколько Mavic много места в рюкзаке не занимал. В первый день мы поднялись на 900 м вверх и ночевали за Драгобратом у источника с водой. Наш путь лежал по полонине Свидовец, поэтому мы прошли горы Близница, Темпа,...В день мы проходили 11-15 км. Были счастливы, когда спустились в с. Устье-Черная, но к сожалению счасть долго не длилось, т. к. оказалось, что нет городское транспорта, и нам ещё прийдется идти до Колочавы. Повезло, что местный подвёз на машине через с. Русская Мокрая, Немецкая Мокрая. Но остальной путь нам пришлось преодолеть пешком. Дороги там убитые или же из просто нет, поэтому мы понимаем, почему автобусы там не ходят. Не смотря на все эти трудности с транспортом, Карпаты летом великолепны и мы обязательно вернёмся туда ещё не один раз.

First Class Night Train, Ukraine - Kiev - Ivano-Frankivsk
The night train is a great way to get cheaply from one part of Ukraine to another. We took a First Class journey for just £35.00, 40 Euro from Kiev to Ivano-Frankivsk. The 13 hour journey was a real adventure and a time warp back to the 70's on this quaint service.

Valea Viseului:
Valea Viseului is located in a very attractive region in the extreme north of Romania. The Ukraine border with Romania is located in the north of the village. In the north-west of the village the Viseu River joins the Tisza. The Vișeu River also separates the village into two important areas : the main part of the village - on the right bank of the Vișeu River - and Zaveschiva - on the left bank of Viseu River. The village has two churches: an Orthodox church and a Catholic church. Valea Vișeului railway station is an important railway station in Maramureș County, the village having direct links with some of the main cities of Romania, like Bucharest, Timișoara, Cluj-Napoca or Mangalia (only in summer), and also with Ukraine - Rakhiv.
Valea Vișeului (în ucraineană Вишiвска Дοлина, în maghiară Visóvölgy) este un sat în comuna Bistra din județul Maramureș, Transilvania, România.
Satul este situat la sud de granița cu Ucraina. În partea de nord-vest a satului Valea Vișeului, râul Vișeu se varsă în Tisa. În sat există o biserică ortodoxă și una catolică.
Valea Vișeului este un important nod feroviar în județul Maramureș, satul având legături directe cu unele dintre principalele orașe din România, ca de ex. București, Timișoara, Cluj sau Mangalia (doar vara). În trecut, exista și un tren care lega satul de localitatea ucraineană Rakhiv, însă, de câțiva ani, acesta nu mai circulă.
