Skyline Drive is a 105-mile road that runs the entire length of the National Park Service's Shenandoah National Park in the Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia, generally along the ridge of the mountains. The drive's northern terminus is at an intersection with U.S. Route 340 near Front Royal, and the southern terminus is at an interchange with US 250 near Interstate 64 in Rockfish Gap, where the road continues south as the Blue Ridge Parkway. The road has intermediate interchanges with US 211 in Thornton Gap and US 33 in Swift Run Gap. Skyline Drive is part of Virginia State Route 48, which also includes the Virginia portion of the Blue Ridge Parkway, but this designation is not signed. However, its scope is international in that it states, In Tribute to the valor, fidelity and sacrifice of Allied Forces on D-Day, June 6, 1944 and commends all Allied Armed Forces during the D-Day invasion of Normandy, France on June 6, 1944 during World War II.The memorial, bordering the Blue Ridge Mountains in southwestern Virginia, is an area of over 50 acres that overlooks the town of Bedford. It officially opened on June 6, 2001 with 15,000 people present, one of whom was then-President George W. Bush. About 60,000 people have visited the memorial each year. Of those, more than half are from outside of Virginia.

Natural Chimneys at Mt. Solon, Virginia

Located in the upper Shenandoah Valley near the community of Mt. Solon, Virginia, is the Natural Chimneys Regional Park. The property is owned and managed by Augusta County. The namesake of this park are the 500 million year old limestone chimneys. The highest of these towers over 120 feet above ground level. The rock formation was created under the ocean and then pushed up by magma as the Appalachian Mountains were formed. Caves and sinkholes collapsed, and other forces destroyed weaker layers of rock and eventually formed the chimneys as they are today. The park offers many recreational activities.

Fun Fact: every August since 1821, this park hosts one of the largest jousting tournaments in the United States.

Natural (and Unnatural) Virginia

There are, of course, many roadside attractions that dot the landscape of our nation. We would argue, however, that there is a 5-mile stretch of Highway 11 in the Commonwealth of Virginia that sports more of them than anywhere else in the country. In this episode, we explore two of the many sites along Highway 11 that await visitors who find themselves in this part of the Shenandoah Valley. Our favorite thing about this 5-mile stretch of highway is that it features sites that are on opposite extremes - the sublime and the ridiculous.On one extreme, one can enjoy the breath-taking scenery of Virginia's Natural Bridge. As our episode details, the Natural Bridge has inspired at least two American presidents, as well as author Herman Melville, who used this natural wonder as a mechanism to describe his infamous whale, Moby Dick.In contrast, Highway 11 also features the delightful Foamhenge, a detailed replica of the original Stonehenge made entirely out of Styrofoam. Trust us, you have to watch this episode to see just how detailed this replica is.
