WALKING IN LONDON | WANSTEAD PARK
This was a 4.75 mile solo walk in Wanstead Park in East London. The area holds some distant fond memories as I spent a brief period of my childhood here when my late father owned a shop in nearby Wanstead. In his younger years he also worked on the set of The Big Sleep, a film that was filmed partly at The Grotto in Wanstead Park!
The route started by the train station and headed towards and then into the park via Florrie's Hill and then took me around the ornamental waters and River Roding. There is a lot of history there regarding the former huge mansion and it's grounds.
Must visit cities in summer
Things to do when in Lisbon (Like us on facebook and voyagelight.com)
Walk streets of Alfama
Get lost in countless narrow streets of the oldest district of Lisbon - Alfama. Go up and down the hilly lanes and take your time to admire buildings covered in painted ceramic tilework called Azulejo. Not only these tiles fulfil their decorative function, but also serve as temperature controlling element. These small pieces are responsible for the magical atmosphere. Tiles can be found everywhere - outside, inside, covering churches’ walls, museums, bridges or regular houses. A signature artwork of Portugal has plenty variations of colours and patterns, often creating a bigger picture. Just wander around and grasp the artistic feel of the place. You will come across many graffiti too.
Reach the castle
St. George’s Castle is located on the hill and is surrounded by the Citadel.
This is the place not to be missed due to amazing views and the historical values of Medieval Moorish Castle. From the citadel you can see the whole city, the Tagus River and the 25 April Bridge.
Checkout the city from different viewpoints
Lisbon is definitely one of the cities which are pleasant to watch from a higher point. Its hilly terrain gives plenty of options from where you can grasp as much as possible for the eyes. Viewpoints, in Portuguese - Miraduoros, are located in any upper part of the city, so patience in incline walking is necessary, but one’s efforts will be rewarded. Miraduoro da Graca (Sophia de Mello Breyner Andresen) is definitely worth recommendation, among many others: Miraduoro da Nossa Senhora do Monte, São Pedro de Alcântara, Miraduoro de Santa Luiza or Miraduoro de Santo Estevao.
Spend time in Bairro Alto and Chiado
As normally expected of the central area of any city, in Bairro Alto and Chiado walks, squares, architectonic attractions are accumulated. Everything a tourist is looking for can be found. If you would like to buy something, eat a local dish or just wander around busy streets - this is the place to be. One can observe the city’s flow during the day and enjoy partying at night.
Raise above the rooftops using Santa Justa Elevator
Located centrally and a landmark of Lisbon, the lift gives the opportunity to admire the city form a much more different perspective. One can see the vivid rooftops and the castle hill from here. Although this is lower than some of the viewpoints, it allows to understand the levels of terrain and buildings arrangement.
Visit the main square and the Triumphal Arch
Enter Praca do Comercio through the Triumphal Arch and see its greatness. Climb to the top of the arch to see the main square from the bird’s flight view. Get to the river bank, marvel at the Red Bridge. Feel the vibe of the place and enjoy it. Listen to men playing instruments, see tourists taking pictures. Be a part of this historically, politically and strategically important spot on Lisbon’s map where once crucial decisions for the city have been made.
See famous Lisbon trams
Another hallmark of Lisbon are the old-styled (most frequently yellow) trams. Walking around, one can see them passing by or actually take tram number 28 which goes through the most popular sights. Another possibility is to seat down comfortably by one of the streets along the tramline and watch them, in the meanwhile having something to eat and drink. That’s an alternative for those who hate packed trams.
Cross the Red Bridge and see the statue of Jesus
Sanctuary of Christ the King is in Almada district. To get there you either need to go through the 25 de Abril Bridge or get a ferry. The other side of the river is more modern – this is a good opportunity to see the discrepancy between new and old Lisbon. Monument of Christ was and inspiration taken from the Christ the Redeemer in Rio de Janeiro. The 110 meters high monument is dedicated to Jesus Christ’s heart. Under the Statue there is a Chapel of Our Lady of Peace (Nossa Senhora da Paz).
Find Torre de Belem and Monastry De Jeronimo
This 12 meters x 30 meters tower was a part of a defence from 16th century. Right now it stands at the bank of Tagus river, but previously (before the river flow change) was on a small island serving as support for the defence fortress. Close by is the Portuguese Late Gothic Manueline style Monastery. If around there, it’s worth seeing due to exceptional architectonical style and details. Both, Tower and the Monastery are the UNESCO World Heritage Sites.
