Canada’s capital was named best place to live for new Canadians in a scoring system that gave extra weight to unemployment rate, average rent and cultural diversity when comparing cities across the provinces and territories.
New Canadian immigrants should be beating a path to Ottawa, according to new rankings from MoneySense magazine.
Ottawa also topped the overall poll in a study that incorporated everything from average income to taxes, crime and weather.
You do not have to travel too far for the second place city for newcomers, with Quebec City of Gatineau, just across the river, filling the runner-up spot.
When you first immigrated to Canada, you probably chose your city or town of destination based on several factors:
You might have already had family or friends in that city.
You had visited the city before and liked it.
You had done your research and believed it was the right choice for you based on what the city had to offer in amenities, employment and climate.

Beautiful Oakville - one of the most affluent towns in Canada

A town in Halton Region, on Lake Ontario in Southern Ontario, Canada, and is part of the Greater Toronto Area.

Oakville's first industries included shipbuilding, timber shipment, and wheat farming. In the 1850s, there was an economic recession and the foundry, the most important industry in town, was closed. Basket-making became a major industry in the town, and the Grand Trunk Railway was built through it.
The town eventually became industrialized with the opening of Petro Canada and Shell Canada oil refineries (both now closed), the Procor factory, and, most importantly, the Ford Motor Company's Canadian headquarters and plant, all close to the Canadian National Railway and the Queen Elizabeth Way highway between Toronto and Fort Erie (Buffalo).

In 1962 the town of Oakville merged with its neighbouring villages to become the new Town of Oakville, reaching northwards to Steeles Avenue in Milton. In 1973, the restructuring of Halton County into Halton Region brought the northern border southwards to just north of Highway 407.

So here are the Top 5 Canadian cities you’re going to want to avoid.

At Number 5. Kitchener-Waterloo, Ontario
If you're fleeing the States to avoid the tidal wave of racial abuse, best avoid Canada’s hate crime capital, Kitchener-Waterloo. Verbal and physical attacks on minority ethnic, religious, and LGBT communities happen here on a higher per capita rate than anywhere else in the country.

Number 4. Miramichi, New Brunswick
The city of Miramichi however, banded together to craft a symbol of the town’s growing support for the LGBT community. Shortly afterwards, the stamps were defaced twice. What’s more, residents have responded with outright homophobia.

Number 3. Sarnia, Ontario
This might look like a boring little town, with a decent cost of living and good enough schools. That's if you ignore the fact that the view is densely populated with pollution-spewing factories. Also, ecumenic stagnation has caused Sarnia’s downtown area to become a ghost town.

Saint John is very close to an idyllic little town of resplendent natural beauty named St. John’s. So unless you want to work in a paper mill or a nuclear power plant, you should definitely shoot for St. John’s NOT St. John.

Did you know people still mine asbestos? It’s got to come from somewhere; at least, that’s the philosophy in Thetford Mines, a place so dedicated to extracting the exceptionally unhealthy substance that they named the town after it.
