Places to see in ( Sestri Levante - Italy )
Sestri Levante is a town and comune in Liguria, Italy. Lying on the Mediterranean Sea, it is approximately 56 kilometres south of Genoa and is set on a promontory. While nearby Portofino and the Cinque Terre are probably the best-known tourist destinations on the Italian Riviera, Sestri Levante is becoming quite a favorite among Italians. This once quiet fishing village is slowly turning into a tourist hotspot, developing an old and a new town.
Sestri Levante is found approximately halfway between Genoa and La Spezia. The town has two bays: Baia delle Favole, (Bay of the Fables), and Baia del Silenzio, the (Bay of Silence). The original part of Sestri Levante is actually on a peninsula, with the Baia del Silenzio (also known as Portobello) on one side and Baia delle Favole on the other. Baia delle Favole or “Bay of Fairy Tales” was named in honor of Danish writer, Hans Christian Andersen, who lived in Sestri Levante for a short time in 1833.
Sestri Levante has its origins as an ancient maritime and merchant center. Originally a small island with a promontory, it was later connected to the mainland. In Roman times, it was known as Segesta Tigullorum (or Tigulliorum) or simply Segesta, but the place was nearly abandoned when the Roman empire collapsed. It was mentioned again in the year 909 in a certificate of Berengar I of Italy, in which part of its territory was ceded to the basilica di San Giovanni di Pavia. During the Middle Ages, Sestri Levante began to expand, probably giving the fortress appearance that is due to the terrain.
In 1133, the noble family of Lavagna, the Fieschi, attacked Tigullio, the gulf in which Sestri Levante is located, however, they were fought off by the powerful Republic of Genoa, and therefore, Sestri Levante became a part of the republic, for military protection. In the year 1145, the abbey of San Colombano was acquired by the Genoese, and was transformed later into a castle.
In 1170, Sestri Levante was attacked by a naval flotilla from Pisa, but was able to withstand the attack. Sestri Levante is mentioned by Dante Alighieri (as Siestri) in Canto 19 of The Divine Comedy. Sestri Levante is also a song by Australian band Tame Impala, and appeared on their album Live Versions.

Deiva Marina between Cinque Terre and Portofino, Baie del Levante
Leave the stress of the big city behind you and visit Deiva Marina, between Cinque Terre and Portofino!
Deiva Marina is very easy to reach from all the Northern Italian regions as well as from France, Switzerland, Austria, Germany and Slovenia, thanks to an excellent motorway network.
The airports in Genoa and in Pisa offer a good possibility to combine low cost flights with train connections or car rental and the train station is situated 300 meters away from our hotel. By the way, our Hotel Clelia Logis provides a shuttle service from airports and stations!
The beach of Deiva Marina is one of the most beautiful and well known in Riviera di Levante: the sea water is clean, crystal clear and pollution-free.
There is a beautiful network of paths around Deiva Marina that connect the village Cinque Terre, Moneglia, Riva Trigoso, Sestri Levante, Framura, Bonassola , Levanto… A nice track runs northwards , reaches Passo del Bracco and continues on to a height of 800 m above the sea level towards Mount San Nicolao. The route then reaches Velva, Varese Ligure and the path Alta Via dei Monti Liguri
If you are looking for hiking trails, ancient villages and small harbours, you will love being in Cinque Terre region: a landscape with no equals in the world, where tourism, nature, production of wine and oil, and every-day life are perfectly combined together!
From Deiva Marina you can reach Monterosso Cinque Terre by train in 15 minutes…

Cinque Terre Travel Guide: Best Beaches in the World
Cinque Terre Travel Guide: Best Beaches in the World.
Along a beautifully isolated six-mile stretch of the most seductive corner of the Italian Riviera lie the Cinque Terre — five (cinque) small, traffic-free towns gently and steadily carving a good life out of difficult terrain. Each village fills a ravine with a lazy hive of human activity . Calloused locals and sunburned travelers enjoy the area's unique mix of Italian culture and nature. There's not a Fiat or museum in sight — just sun, sea, sand (well, pebbles), wine, and pure, unadulterated Italy. Enjoy the villages, swimming, hiking, boat rides, and evening romance of one of God's great gifts to tourism. While the Cinque Terre is now discovered and can be miserably jam-packed, I've never seen happier, more relaxed tourists.
