South Africa Vlog: Shopping in Johannesburg
December 21, 2012
We spent the afternoon at Sandton City, a huge shopping complex that is adjacent to Nelson Mandela Square. In the Square, you can also find the Sandton Public Library, which is very nice.
If you have a long layover or, like us, are stuck at OR Tambo International Airport in Johannesburg, you can easily go into the city by taking the Gautrain, a commuter train. Most of the stops are in residential areas, but if you want to do a bit of shopping, see a movie, etc., take the Gautrain from OR Tambo to Sandton City. You'll have to buy a Gold Card, which costs a one-time fee of 11 Rand, then add value to the card. A one-way trip from OR Tambo to Sandton City costs 115 Rand per person, which is pricey but still cheaper than taking a taxi.
If you're staying at the Garden Court Hotel, which provides a free shuttle bus service to and from OR Tambo Airport, take the Gautrain back to Rhodesfield Station, which is one stop before the airport. This will cost you just 27 Rand (compared to 115!)! The hotel is about a 10-minute walk from Rhodesfield Station. We strongly suggest that you take this option during daylight hours. If your shopping trip extends into the night, then we recommend that you pay the extra money to take the Gautrain to the airport then ride the free shuttle bus to the hotel, which is the safest option.

Africa - A drive through one of South Africas most dangerous neighborhoods. Diepsloot Johannesburg
I met up with my friend Pilate, who showed me around the south african township of Diepsloot. One of South Africas most dangerous neighborhoods. The township of Diepsloot is just north of Johannesburg and a very interesting place to visit and not nearly as bad as it´s reputation. You can see people going about their daily business. and dogs playing and fighting in the street. Pilate showed me his home and it was a very humbling experience.
Diepsloot is a densely populated settlement in the north of Johannesburg, South Africa. It is made up of government-subsidised housing, brick houses built by landowners as well as shacks. These shacks are built on any piece of land with nothing already on it. Some landowners charge rent to others to stay in a shack on their land.

In this episode, David shows us 5 things to do in Durban, South Africa’s third largest city.
David’s first stop is Moses Mabhida Stadium, it may look familiar to you. It was built to host games during the 2010 FIFA World Cup. It has the capacity to seat 54,000 spectators. Here you can ride Big Rush, the world’s tallest swing as per the Guinness Book of World Records!
Second thing to do in Durban is visit the Golden Mile, a 6-kilometer long beachfront promenade. Here, you can grab a bite, go shopping, or go surfing. There are plenty of surf shops in the area that also offer surf lessons.
Now for some shopping! David goes shopping at Victoria Street Market (AKA the Indian Market). Here you can find Indian spices, crafts, and there is also a meat and fish market.
From the market, David heads to Durban’s aquarium, uShaka Marine World. It is the largest aquarium in Africa and the fifth largest in the world. For lunch David dined at Cargo Hold restaurant located within an old shipwreck inside Ushaka Marina World.
And the last of the 5 things to do in Durban is to try Bunny Chow at House of Curries on Florida Road. It’s basically curry served in a bun and its delicious!
If you’re flying into Durban to experience the nearby game reserves I recommend you spend a couple of days seeing the city!

From its inception in 1992, The Palace of the Lost City, a Leading Hotel of the World, has enthralled, and amazed visitors from all over the globe. This addition to the Pilanesberg landscape is dwarfed in years by the 1,300 million year old extinct volcanic site on which it is built.
The 55,000 hectare, malaria-free Pilanesberg National Park, borders on the Sun City complex. It was opened in 1979, and is to date the largest game re-settlement project in the history of South Africa. The Mankwe Lake, a game draw-card, marks the centre of the ancient volcano.
The term “Super Seven” was coined for the Park, as cheetah and wild dogs can be found, in addition to elephant, lion, leopard, rhino and buffalo. The diverse vegetation supports a wealth of other mammals, bird, reptile, and tree species.
Danie de Jager’s bronze wildlife sculptures in the grounds of The Palace of the Lost City, pay powerful homage to these living treasures.

The Royal Livingston:

On the forested banks of the Great Zambezi River, upstream of the mighty cataract where it thunders into the Batoka Gorge, is The Royal Livingstone, the pride of Zambian hospitality. In its cool lounges and shaded veranda you will encounter the elegance and luxury of an earlier bygone era.
The Royal Livingstone is a serene and gracious refuge from the heat of the African sun. The luxurious rooms with their comfortable furnishings are tastefully decorated in the soft earthy tones of the bushveld, with spreading views of the river and the acacia forest. Guest may pass lazy days on the magnificent sundeck overlooking the great Zambezi as it flows relentlessly to the Falls and enjoy fine dining in the restaurant or on the long veranda overlooking the gardens. In the warm smile of your personal butler, or the simple luxury of your cane chair, you will find an Africa that has all but vanished.
