Rochlitz Castle or Rochlitz Palace lies in the west of the town of Rochlitz in the county of Mittelsachsen in the Free State of Saxony. It was built on the site of an imperial castle, erected in the second half of the 10th century, which fell into the possession of the Wettin margraves in 1143. Its appearance, which includes several Romanesque wings, is considerably influenced by its remodelling into a margravial schloss in the fourth quarter of the 14th century. Further conversions and additions followed at the end of the 15th and in the 16th centuries, when the castle became a secondary residenz, dower house and hunting lodge for the Wettin family. Castle Colditz is a Renaissance castle in the town of Colditz near Leipzig, Dresden and Chemnitz in the state of Saxony in Germany. The castle is between the towns of Hartha and Grimma on a hill spur over the river Zwickauer Mulde, a tributary of the River Elbe. It had the first wildlife park in Germany when, during 1523, the castle park was converted into one of the largest menageries in Europe. The castle gained international fame as the site of Oflag IV-C, a prisoner-of-war camp during World War II for incorrigible Allied officers who had repeatedly escaped from other camps.

Königstein Fortress , the Saxon Bastille, is a hilltop fortress near Dresden, in Saxon Switzerland, Germany, above the town of Königstein on the left bank of the River Elbe. It is one of the largest hilltop fortifications in Europe and sits atop the table hill of the same name. The 9.5 hectare rock plateau rises 240 metres above the Elbe and has over 50 buildings, some over 400 years old, that bear witness to the military and civilian life in the fortress. The rampart run of the fortress is 1,800 metres long with walls up to 42 metres high and steep sandstone faces. In the centre of the site is a 152.5 metre deep well, which is the deepest in Saxony and second deepest well in Europe. VLOG#5 features Colditz WW2 POW Castle! The prison is now a hostel!

So, we're still in Germany - by way of the Czech Republic for a night or two. I've wanted to visit the World War 2 prison camp of Colditz since I was a kid. My kids? Less enthusiastic (as you'll see). And get a load of Garmisch - nestled on the Austrian/German border and probably the prettiest place I've ever stayed in.

Our one-year #Bradventure is taking us to The Netherlands, Denmark, Germany, Czech Republic, Austria, Switzerland, Morocco, Caribbean, USA, Hawaii, New Zealand, Australia, Japan, UAE, Albania, Montenegro & Bosnia-Herzegovina - and who knows where else?

Yup, WE SOLD THE HOUSE (see Vlog#2). Feel free to question me on the lunacy of only having a camper van to call a home.
