Backroads of Montana: Cakes & Cowboys (2009)
Episode #31 of BACKROADS OF MONTANA. This BACKROADS OF MONTANA episode travels first to Park City, where everyone will tell you that the best angel food for miles around comes from The Cake Ladies. In Great Falls, we'll visit a special site that not only honors fallen soldiers, but pays tribute to living veterans as well. We stop in the central Montana town of Winifred, the unlikely location for what may be the world's largest Tonka toy collection. And we visit a working cowboy singer on his ranch south of Wibaux. William Marcus hosts the program from Malta.

Badlands National Park, South Dakota
Badlands National Park in South Dakota is an amazing geological landscape of rugged beauty. These striking geologic deposits contain one of the world's richest fossil beds. The park's 244,000 acres protect an expanse of mixed-grass prairie where bison, bighorn sheep and prairie dogs live today.

MY TRIP TO NORTHERN CHEYENNE RESERVATION , PINE RIDGE REZ & WOUNDED KNEE
Last year, I bought Bisco a pair of black walking shoes because his feet hurt so much....and he told me... Sally,
(he called me Sally because he could not pronounce my name as Shelley )...He said Sally.... these shoes should last me till I die....
and.... they did.......
Last night, somewhere between 10:30 pm and midnight... my dear friend...moved on to the next camp of his ancestors.......( a Cheyenne expression for 'death' )
..July 5th, 2011....... He is now resting in peace...free from pain....free from grief....it was his decision to stop his dialysis.... I was told by his daughter, that at the end... he slept in his black shoes... every night .....
Renee, Bisco and I spent 3 days together...and it was honestly the best, most fascinating days of my entire life....
As a girl, my mom had this plaque on our kitchen wall that said never judge a man till you walk a mile in his moccasins..... that day..... I walked in his moccasins....as he took us from place to place...telling stories of his boyhood and the Indian ways..... I have never been so mesmerized or so hungry for information.... as I was those 3 days... I never wanted them to end..... It was pure magic.....
As a young girl.... I found out my great grandmother was full blooded Lakota, which is why I became fascinated with the culture.
I may not make it to your funeral my friend....but I will be with you....in spirit..... flying high over the valley you took me too.. I feel so much safer now...knowing you will be looking over me now.... till we meet again.....my friend.....
This video was made a few years ago and is dedicated to my friend, Chief Bisco Wolf, who I had the honor of spending 3 days with in Ashland, Mt. in 2008. Anyone who is interested in reading a short account about Bisco by author Renee Flood...visit this site...
Bisco is the grandson of Chief Spotted Wolf who fought alongside his friend, Crazy Horse, at the Battle of the Rosebud and the Little Bighorn. My great grandmother was full blooded Lakota, raised on a reservation, and I have always been fascinated with the culture. As a girl, I had a dream of meeting a great chief, and it has come true. Since meeting Bisco over 3 years ago now, we still talk on the phone once a week, and since he is in very bad health now, I made this video of the trip to meet him, in his honor. I was told he was overcome with emotion while viewing this video that I made for him , and since he is not from the 'computer age' I was told he was 'astounded' as to how I got him on a video on the computer :-) Here's to one last brave run, my friend :-)
POMPEYS PILLAR NATIONAL MONUMENT
Pompeys Pillar is one of the most famous sandstone buttes in America. It bears the only remaining physical evidence of the Lewis and Clark Expedition, which appears on the trail today as it did 204 years ago. On the face of the 150-foot butte, Captain William Clark carved his name on July 25, 1806, during his return to the United States through the beautiful Yellowstone Valley in Montana.
Clark named the Pillar Pomp's Tower. Pomp was Clark's nickname for young Baptiste Charbonneau, infant son of Sacagawea, the Shoshoni woman who accompanied the expedition and contributed greatly to its success. The name was changed to Pompeys Pillar when an account of the Expedition was published by Nicolas Biddle in 1814.
This rock I ascended and from it's top had a most extensive view in every direction on the Northerly Side of the river high romantic Clifts approach & jut over the water for some distance both above and below...I marked my name and the day of the month and year.
