Canada: Quebec, Basilica of Sainte-Anne-de-Beaupré
The Shrine, which celebrated its 350th anniversary in 2008, is one of the oldest pilgrimage sites in North America
The Basilica of Sainte-Anne-de-Beaupré has been credited by the Catholic Church with many miracles of curing the sick and disabled. It is an important Catholic sanctuary which receives about a half-million pilgrims each year.
Because of the popularity of the shrine, the building was enlarged several times to accommodate all the pilgrims. In 1876, the first basilica opened for worship. The former basilica was destroyed in a fire on March 29, 1922. The present-day basilica was built on the site of the prior church in 1926.
The architecture of the Shrine of Sainte-Anne-de-Beaupré is inspired by the French religious architecture of the Middle Ages. It follows the roman tradition in its archways and detail, but its vast proportions and elevations lend to a more gothic style. The exterior tympanum reminds us of the great European churches. This basilica is one of the rare churches in North America that has five naves each having its own distinct vault. The elevation of the central nave includes three elements that are often seen in gothic cathedrals: large archways, a triforium and tall stained glass windows.
The Immaculate Conception Chapel, situated in the crypt of the Basilica, is consecrated to Mary, daughter of Saint Anne. The lighting and Marian colours create an atmosphere of serenity. A Carrara marble copy of Michael Angelo’s Pieta is placed in this chapel.

ST. GEORGE'S MARKET BELFAST - A Thriving 19th Century Market
St. George's Market in Belfast is a unique place to eat in Belfast - but also shop for beautiful gifts all the way to fresh organic fruit and vegetables or even fish.
Sunday would be considered the best day to visit the market due to the stalls present - nothing better than settling into a Belfast Bap and listening to some live music after a lazy walk around the stalls.
It is definitely one of the places to see in Belfast - or things to do. Opening times are Friday 6 am to 3 pm, Saturday 9 am to 3 pm and Sunday 10 am to 4 pm. There are often special market days and nights advertised closer to the time.
Any taxi driver would bring you straight to the markets - and they can be entered from 3 different sides of the building. There are more permanent restaurants on site also - everything from a Subway, Simply Fish and Chips shop to St. George's Market Bar & Grill - where the food sold is mostly sourced from the market itself.
A must visit for locals and tourists. Everything from craft stalls and artists to sweet and tea makers to fish market stalls. Saint George's market will not let you down if you are looking for something a little different.
One of the things that always attract a huge number of people is the markets that would be serving them with almost all their needs; they could get some food, they could sit there and have something to eat, and they could even get themselves something new or buy a gift for someone; all that is included in St. George's market that is located in Belfast and which not only locals enjoy going to, but also tourists should think about spending some of their time at.
St. George's Market is the last surviving Victorian covered market in Belfast, which is located on May Street, close to River Lagan and the Waterfront Hall. The interesting thing about visiting St. George's Market in Belfast is also coming close to this historic building that is standing there. This old building was built between 1890 and 1896 and was mainly used as an open market that most likely contained a slaughterhouse and a meat market, which of course is totally different than today with those more than 300 traders, crafters, musicians and foodies who are putting their touch in the place.
There is a long history behind this market or at least that building which was used as a market, and this history even included helping in the World War II as an emergency mortuary. The first time this market opened was before 1890 but back at that time it was smaller than what people get to see these days. After that, the newly covered market was opened in 1890 and from this point, it has undergone different changes to reach the fully renovated market that officially opened its gates for the public in 1999.
St. George's is mainly a market but there are other events that sometimes take their place in it - so you could be lucky enough to choose a day on which you will also attend an event. These events differ between being food festivals, art initiatives, exhibitions, charity launches, fashion shoots and live music events; you could find anything you might not be even expecting.
With the different awards that St. George's market received and with all the musical events that took place inside, this place becomes more interesting for tourists and locals to visit whenever they feel like it - they just have to be sure about the working times because they change from weekdays to weekends.
Enjoying St. George's market and buying some stuff along with trying some of the food is not the end of what one could do in Belfast because this market is very close to the centre of the city and thus tourists could go and complete their day by visiting any of Belfast attractions.
From the places to visit in Belfast which we always place on the top of our list, there is Belfast City Hall ( Ulster Museum ( Belfast Castle ( the Cathedral Quarter ( St. Anne's Cathedral ( and even go to check all what might have any relation with Titanic ship; the museum ( the dock and pump house ( or just being in Titanic Quarter where the SS Nomadic that is known as its small sister is also found and opening its doors for visitors to come inside and see what it has to offer them (
St. George's Market for some people is just a place for buying some goods and going back home, but we recommend it for people because they might try new things and they will also feel the power of the place and the energy it might be moving around.
