The Reversing Falls are a series of rapids on the Saint John River located in Saint John, New Brunswick, Canada, where the river runs through a narrow gorge before emptying into the Bay of Fundy. The semidiurnal tides of the bay force the flow of water to reverse against the prevailing current when the tide is high, although in the spring freshet, this is frequently surpassed by the downstream volume of water. The rapids, or falls, are created by a series of underwater ledges which roil the water in either direction, causing a significant navigation hazard, despite the depth of water. As a result, vessels wishing to enter or exit from the river must wait for slack tide. The Reversing Falls has also been an important industrial site for over a century. The tower dates from the War of 1812 and played a significant role in conflicts until the Second World War. The Saint John City Market is the oldest continuously operated farmer's market in Canada, with a charter dating from 1785. Located in Saint John, New Brunswick and completed in 1876, the current market building has a unique roof structure that resembles an inverted ship's keel. Made of wooden trusses, the structure was reportedly built by unemployed ship carpenters of the day. Also, the floor slopes with the natural grade of the land. The architecture is in the Second Empire style. Some of the businesses in the market have been operating continuously there for more than 100 years. Facing onto Kings Square, the market is connected to the city's indoor pedway system. The market was designated a National Historic Site of Canada in 1986.

New Brunswick surprised us in so many ways. From kayaking some of the highest tides in the world to the walking around the historic streets of Fredericton, we experienced so much in such little time. We walked on the ocean floor during low tide, rappelled down a cliff at Cape Enrage, went back in time at King's Landing, zip-lined over a canyon in Grand Falls, and stumbled across a military ceremony in Fredericton where we got to see a new commanding officer take charge complete with a marching band, marching soldiers, and the opportunity to go inside a LAV.

Canada's Road to 150 is a 150-day Canada-wide multimedia road trip celebrating Canada's 150th birthday by exploring the uniqueness of this country provincially and collectively while answering the question; What makes Canada special?

From the world's highest tides on the Bay of Fundy to warm swimming waters on the Gulf of St. Lawrence, the sightseeing pleasures of New Brunswick may come as a surprise. The province is virtually rectangular in shape, bordering Québec, Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island, and the U.S. State of Maine.

The largest cities are Saint John, Moncton, and the provincial capital, Fredericton. But among the dense forests (which cover more than three-quarters of the province), rivers divide the land into shallow valleys with good farmland.
