St. Martinville is a city in, and the parish seat of, St. Martin Parish, Louisiana, United States. It lies on Bayou Teche, sixteen miles south of Breaux Bridge, eighteen miles southeast of Lafayette, and nine miles north of New Iberia. The population was 6,114 at the 2010 census, down from 6,989 in 2000. It is part of the Lafayette Metropolitan Statistical Area.

The Acadians are the descendants of French colonists who settled in Acadia during the 17th and 18th centuries, some of whom are also descended from the Indigenous peoples of the region. The colony was located in what is now Eastern Canada's Maritime provinces , as well as part of Quebec, and present-day Maine to the Kennebec River. Although today most of the Acadians and Québécois are French-speaking Canadians, Acadia was a distinctly separate colony of New France. It was geographically and administratively separate from the French colony of Canada . As a result, the Acadians and Québécois developed two distinct histories and cultures. After driving through a hard snowfall, 11-12 Feb 2010, leaving McComb, Mississippi, we see the sign for The Louisiana Welcome Station and drove in. They have it all decorated in Saints and Who Dat signs. They are downhome people and had some hot, Louisiana coffee for the traveler. Don't forget the free maps and tourist stuff. I've only been to 3 or 4 Welcome Stations and this one seemed the best of the rest. The Mississippi one, heading north on I-55, was closed due to plumbing and I would have liked one of their maps. Check out the Mardi Gras tree inside. It's not a Christmas Tree, a Mardi Gras Tree!

The spectacular quarter-mile canopy of 28 evenly spaced giant live oak trees, believed to be nearly 300 years old, forms an impressive avenue leading to the classic Greek-revival style antebellum home built in 1839. The opulence of the home has been authentically restored to its original grandeur. Daily tours of the mansion are conducted by guides dressed in period costumes and are given every half hour, generally lasting 35 to 40 minutes. Visitors may walk the well-manicured grounds at their leisure with the help of a grounds map. Be sure to try one of our famous mint juleps while strolling the grounds, this will make you feel like Rhett and Scarlet from a bygone era, as you retreat to the peace and tranquility of plantation life. The Grounds open at 9:00 a.m. and tours begin at 10:00 a.m. last tour is 4:40 p.m. Monday through Friday and 5:00 p.m. Saturday and Sunday.
