Orléans is a city on the banks of the Loire River in north-central France, and it’s the capital of the Centre-Val de Loire region. Joan of Arc famously saved the city from English siege in 1429, an event celebrated with an annual festival. A re-creation of the house where she stayed during the battle, the Maison de Jeanne d’Arc, features multimedia exhibits on her life.
Orleans, the capital of the department of the Loiret and the Centre region of France (no not Tours) is a city that has struggled to return to former glories after being devastated during World War II. History has not been kind to Orleans what with the Romans, Attila the Hun and the English all doing their best to wipe it out even before then. A few historic buildings have survived and they, along with the obvious Joan of Arc connection keep it on the Loire Valley tourist map.
Welcoming more visitors than any other attraction in the department, the Parc Floral de la Source is a semi-wild park next to the university, where Orléans meets the countryside. If you visit the tourist office they'll provide you with an itinerary to enable you to visit the main sites of interest in the city and appreciate the Romanesque churches, the many examples of renaissance architecture, the half timbered houses and the various museums throughout the city.
The three main places of interest have to be the impressive cathedral 'Ste-Croix', Hotel Groslot (former Hotel de Ville) and the re-creation of Joan of Arc's house on Place General-de-Gaulle. The kids might enjoy this more than adults so be sure to give a little insight into her history as an introduction.
Don't miss taking the kids, especially the younger ones, to Parc Floral de la Source a 32 hectare site which has everything from a butterfly kingdom ,kid's play area, puppet shows and glorious garden displays. It can be found south of the river in the direction of St-Cyr-en-Val. There is an entrance fee for adults - kids under 6 free. From the end of April to the first week in May, the anniversary of the liberation of Orleans by Joan of Arc is celebrated by a series of events including :medieval festival and market, concerts, exhibitions, sound and light displays plus various processions commencing with 'Joan' entering the city through the 'Port de Bourgogne'.
The high points of these festivities are during the first couple of days with the ceremony of the standard handed from the mayor to the bishop, the commemorative parades, concerts in the town and a firework display on the facade of the cathedral. Alot to see in Orleans such as :

The Saint-Aignan church is named after the Bishop of Orleans at 400 , when amounted already a pre-Romanesque church, later replaced by other buildings that suffered fire in xii th century and in 1262 . Saint-Aignan was the parish of the Counts of Blois and Chartres.
The tradition because of the high church of the v th century by Aignan Orleans , which nothing remains, the burial place of the saint. Tucked between the castle today disappeared from the counts of Chartres and the wall rebuilt in the ix th century , it became the Late Middle Ages the first parish church of the city and the oldest remains.
It was rebuilt in the xiv th century in Gothic style , as evidenced by the main gate, only vestige of that era. The modesty of it is related to the narrowness of the network of alleys of then. The terrace that opens to the south covers the old cemetery. The bedside is then extended on the top of the rampart, which has no more use.
The crypt, well lit by windows that open onto St. Peter street below, when the end of the xv th century but the present building dates from the early xvi th century . At the last flamboyant exercises (profiles of the pillars, decorations of tympanums) are imposed the columns in the antique typical of the Renaissance . The small portal of the north aisle bears the date of 1541 . The architect may be the same as that of the Sainte - Foy church , partially destroyed during the Revolution . His vault project for the nave , whose columns were to bear thewarheads , was canceled.
The turret left dated xvi th and xvii th centuries . It is connected to the main building by a buttress arch bearing a staircase that dates from the project of 1541. The abutments planned for the other bow-props remain on the exterior facades unemployed. The gallery of the second floor is not elevated until 1625 , under Louis XIII . We are satisfied with a wooden shingle to cover the nave and a triforium for the aisles .
Nationalized during the Revolution , the church is generously converted into a military hospital . It escapes the insults of the Terror by being made prison and is resold against some assignats to a contractor, who uses it as a fodder store, which saves it from a slaughter. The Restoration makes it to worship in 1822 . In 1869 , interior painting, polychrome frescoes in the romantic style, was entrusted to a collaborator of Eugène Viollet-le-Duc , Émile Boeswillwald .

Saint-Aignan d'Orléans is a collegiate church in the Bourgogne quarter of Orléans on the north bank of the Loire. The church is dedicated to Anianus, a fifth-century bishop of Orléans, who, according to legend, persuaded Attila the Hun not to sack the city.
According to Gregory of Tours, there was a basilica with a shrine to Anianus where Bishop Namatius was buried after his death in 587. A monastery dedicated to Anianus existed in the first half of the seventh century, because in 651 its abbot, Leodebodus, left to found a new monastery at Fleury on land donated by King Clovis II. According to the Chronicle of Fredegar, written in the middle of the century, the shrine of Anianus was comparable in importance to that of Saint Martin of Tours. Queen Balthild (died 680) supported reform there by introducing the rule of Benedict and that of the Irish missionary Columbanus.
By the ninth century, the abbacy at Saint-Aignan was the vitual hereditary possession of a noble family, the counts of Orléans. During the reign of Louis the Pious, Count Odo I (died 834) tried to confiscate all the churches in the Orléanais and usurp the abbacy of Saint-Aignan. Mid-century, control of the monastery passed to the bishops, who also controlled the countship, and later in the century to the Robertian dynasty. To historians of this period, urban Saint-Aignan is more obscure than its rural daughter house at Fleury.
In the Illatio sancti Benedicti, composed between 1010 and 1018, Theodoric of Fleury recounts a legend then current at Fleury. When some Vikings attacked Fleury by sailing down the Loire, the relics of Benedict of Nursia were brought to Saint-Aignan for safekeeping. The monks there sued to keep them, but by a miracle they were sailed back down the frozen river to Fleury when the danger was past.
The monastery of Saint-Aignan was rededicated in 1029. At the time its main altar was jointly dedicated to Saints Peter and Anianus, while the altar in the choir was dedicated to Anianus alone, whose relics lay in the crypt below it. There were twelve minor altars lining the nave, dedicated to saints of both local and universal importance, but the six local saints whose relics the church possessed did not have any altars, liturgies or hagiographies at all. Shortly after this date, the bones of Saint Euspicius were transferred to Saint-Mesmin de Micy. In the 1070s, an anonymous monk of Saint-Aignan composed the Miracula sancti Aniani, a collection of stories of miracles performed by Anianus.

Places to see in ( Angers - France ) Collegiale Saint Martin
The Saint-Martin church, located in the historic center of Angers , is one of the best preserved Carolingian monuments in France and a testimony of fifteen centuries of architectural evolution. His choir is a very fine example of the Gothic Angevin style .
Archaeological excavations conducted in xx th century by Canon Pinier and GH Forsyth and more recently by county archaeologists have uncovered the foundations of the first churches, dated respectively V th , VI th , VII th centuries. The first building, probably built to accommodate the burial of a bishop of the city, was indeed quickly enlarged in the following centuries.
The third church is more ambitious than the previous ones. Lying several meters, it has a cruciform plan thanks to its overflowing transept, each arm extended by an apse. Archaeologists attribute the reconstruction at the Wolf bishop , who died in the last third of the vii th century
The church was again rebuilt in the x th century, with the particularity of having four large arches alternating tufa stone and brick to frame the crossing. In the following century, it was the Count of Anjou Foulques Nerra who marked the building with its imprint. With his wife Hildegard, they instituted at Saint-Martin 13 canons to serve, making the church a collegiate. In addition, the count commissioned works, especially at the cross of the transept where was installed a dome, always visible.
By the middle of the xii th century Carolingian choir of college is transformed in the Gothic style and expanded in a second campaign work. A second span and an apse have lengthened the building in a Gothic style called Angevin or Plantagenet, which is characterized by the convex appearance of its vaults.
The old chapel of the Middle Ages was then enlarged at the beginning of the xiii th century. Called Chapel of Angels because of its remarkable decor, its transformation marked the end of the Gothic reconstruction of the building. In the chapel, remains of a rich original painted decoration remain. At the beginning of the last century, the Massacre des Innocents and the Adoration of the Magi were still read ; unfortunately only the Virgin and the Child Jesus are still discerning. The chapel also has a rich collection of capitals well highlighted by current lighting.
Following the French Revolution, the chapter of canons was suppressed. After several months of abandonment, the church served as warehouse at the town hall for confiscated books, before being sold to individuals. The building was used as a store of firewood and warehouse for the tobacco industry. This change of use was accompanied by a rapid deterioration of the church, who lives disappear xix th century the roof of the nave, the upper floor of the tower, the remains of the cloister and part of the facade. Buildings were then built in front of the building and in the former nave.
